ALBANY – Junior right-hander Josh Johnson tossed a complete game gem to lead The College of Saint Rose past Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division rival New Haven 2-1  this afternoon at Bob Bellizzi Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex.

After the Chargers scored an unearned run in the first, Johnson kept them off the board throughout the final 8.0 innings and worked out of a second and third, no out jam in the eighth. Johnson allowed seven hits and fanned eight over the distance to pick up the victory.

The Golden Knights (7-33/4-16 NE-10) tied the game 1-1 when freshman center fielder Derek Reed led off the third inning with a double down the left field line , advanced to third on a sacrifice and scored on a wild pitch.

Saint Rose then manufactured what proved to be the winning run in the fifth when senior designated hitter Caleb Gleason lobbed a leadoff single just beyond the infield dirt, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and went to third on a base hit by junior left fielder Scott Hladik. He subsequently crossed home via a sacrifice fly off the bat of freshman third baseman Chad Adams.

In the eighth; a leadoff walk, a base hit, and a wild pitch put the tying and winning runs in scoring position for New Haven. However, Johnson sandwiched a pair of strikeouts around an infield popup to keep the Chargers off the scoreboard.

Five players had one hit apiece for the Golden Knights while senior second baseman Andrew Johnson finished with a pair of singles for New Haven (20-12/13-8 NE-10).

Looking ahead, both teams have conference division games on tap for Wednesday. The Golden Knights will host Assumption for a 3:30 pm doubleheader, while New Haven will visit Pace University in Pleasantville. That contest is also set to get underway at 3:30 pm.
