ALBANY – A furious rally by The College of Saint Rose fell short in a wild opening game and a late surge by New Haven allowed the host Chargers to sweep a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader today at Bob Bellizzi Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex. New Haven (20-11/13-7 NE-10) won the opener 18-14 after the two squads pounded out 39 hits collectively and then took the finale 8-3.

The Chargers jumped out to an 11-0 lead in the opener and led 15-2 entering the bottom of the sixth when the Golden Knights (6-33/3-16 NE-10) pushed across two runs in the home half, then scored three times in the seventh and seven times in the eighth to get to within 16-14. However, New Haven tacked on two more in the ninth and senior right-hander Peter Jay retired Saint Rose in order to end the 3:36 marathon.

Sophomore first baseman Zac Bellinger belted his fourth home run of the year and wound up 2-for-5 with three RBI for Saint Rose. Also, senior designated hitter Caleb Gleason finished 4-for-5 with two RBI and freshman center fielder Derek Reed went 3-for-5. Furthermore, senior left fielder Scott Hladik stroked a pair of RBI doubles and sophomore right fielder Lukas Nethaway drove in three runs.

Meanwhile, senior second baseman Andrew Johnson went 4-for-6 with three RBI and junior third baseman Brendon Buckley finished 2-for-4 with four RBI, including a three-run triple to the gap in right-center that highlighted a seven-run, second inning for the Chargers.

In the finale, New Haven scored three times in both the eighth and ninth innings to erase a 3-2 deficit.

Saint Rose went ahead 1-0 when Hladik tripled to left-center and scored on an RBI base hit by freshman third baseman Chad Adams. After the Chargers scored in both the sixth and seventh innings, the Golden Knights went back up 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh when Nethaway tripled to left and scored one batter later on a Reed base hit. Junior shortstop Joseph Carcone followed a Reed stolen base with a base hit that brought across Reed via a New Haven throwing error on the play.

However, the Chargers bats came alive in the final two frames that allowed them to secure the sweep.

Adams, Bellinger and Nethaway had two hits apiece while freshman right-hander Phillip Zdanowski allowed just a run on five hits and fanned four, without issuing a walk, throughout 6.0 innings of work on the mound for the Golden Knights.

Senior right fielder Stephen Clout pounded out three hits, including a triple, for the Chargers.

Looking ahead, these two teams are scheduled to conclude their three-game weekend series tomorrow at 2:00 pm. That game is set to be streamed live on www.gogoldenknights.tv.
