Box Score
WEST HAVEN, CT – The College of Saint Rose scored in each of the last four innings to take the series finale with a 6-5 victory at
Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division rival Southern Connecticut State today.
The Golden Knights (6-29/3-13 NE-10) broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the sixth and one each in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings to hold off the Owls who tied it 4-4 with three runs in their half of the seventh and brought the winning run to the plate in the ninth.
Junior designated hitter
Scott Hladik went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and a run scored to lead the Saint Rose offense. Also, senior left fielder
Caleb Gleason finished 2-for-5 with a double and sophomore right fielder
Lukas Nethaway wound up 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Furthermore, freshman southpaw
Joe Pokrentowski allowed just one run on two hits throughout the final 2.1 innings to pick up his first collegiate victory.
Meanwhile, sophomore second baseman Nick Baviello, junior catcher T.J. Shea, and senior left fielder Collin Dickinson had a pair of hits each for the Owls (17-12-1/7-8 NE-10).
After Southern Connecticut State put runners on the corners with none out in the ninth, Pokrentowski induced a double play that nonetheless made it a 6-5 contest. However, he then got the next batter looking to end the ballgame.
Saint Rose struck in the first as Gleason belted a double to the gap in right-center that put two runners in scoring position after freshman center fielder
Derek Reed drew a leadoff walk. Two batters later, Reed came across on a Hladik RBI groundout.
The Owls also scored in their half of the first to tie it 1-1, which is where the game stood until the sixth when the Golden Knights took a 3-1 lead after senior first baseman
A.J. Capone and Nethaway belted back-to-back, two-out RBI singles. Saint Rose then made it a three-run affair the following inning when Reed came across on a Hladik infield base hit.
However, Southern Connecticut State countered with three runs of its own in the home half of the seventh by taking advantage of a pair of Golden Knights fielding miscues. Saint Rose went back up in the eighth on a sacrifice fly off the bat of freshman catcher
Corey Burrows and then made it 6-4 in the ninth when freshman shortstop
Chad Adams singled up the middle to score Hladik with what proved to be the winning run.
Looking ahead, tomorrow's scheduled conference division home game versus
“Upstate Challenge” rival Le Moyne has been moved to Thursday at 3:30 pm due to a poor weather forecast. Prior to that, Saint Rose will travel to UMass Lowell for a 3:30 pm non-league tilt on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Southern Connecticut State has a 3:30 pm home date scheduled with cross-town rival New Haven tomorrow.
