ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose had two early leads evaporate that allowed visiting Pace University to take both ends of a
Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader this afternoon at
Bob Bellizzi Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex. The Setters scored once in the eighth and three times in the ninth to take the opener 5-2 and then put up three runs in both the sixth and seventh to capture the finale 6-4.
Junior shortstop
Joseph Carcone and freshman third baseman
Chad Adams both went 3-for-4 with a double to lead the Golden Knights in the first game. Also, sophomore left-hander
Bryan Carr allowed two runs and scattered six hits throughout 7.0 innings in a no-decision.
Freshman center fielder Michael Viegas had a pair of run scoring singles for the Setters (14-7/6-2 NE-10).
Saint Rose went up 1-0 in the second when Adams laced a leadoff base hit to center and came around to score three batters later on a sacrifice fly from senior catcher
A.J. Capone. The Golden Knights then made it 2-1 in the fifth when Capone singled, advanced to second on a fielder's choice, and came around via a Carcone base hit down the right field line.
However, Pace tied it in the eighth when senior left fielder Brandon Martinson bounced one up the middle that brought across junior third baseman Chris Gili with the tying run. In the ninth, back-to-back run scoring base hits by Gili and Viegas coupled with an error accounted for the damage by Pace.
In the second game, senior designated hitter
Caleb Gleason went 2-for-4 with an RBI and freshman center fielder
Derek Reed drove in a pair of runs for Saint Rose (3-23/-0-7 NE-10). Senior left fielder Charlie Galasso finished 3-for-5 while junior designated James Pjura had three RBI for Pace.
Saint Rose went ahead 1-0 in the second before the Setters scored three times in the sixth. The Golden Knights got a run back in the home half, but Pace added three more an inning later. Saint Rose then scored once in both the eighth and ninth frames.
Junior right-hander
Adam DeFruscio came out of the bullpen and tossed 2.2 innings of two-hit ball for the Golden Knights, while senior right-hander Eddie Byrne allowed a run on one hit during the final 2.0 innings to collect his third save of the season for the Setters.
Looking ahead, both teams are on the road Tuesday with 3:30 pm NE-10 divisional encounters. The Golden Knights will head to Syracuse to take on Le Moyne while the Setters travel to Long Island to meet Adelphi.
