PATCHOGUE, NY – The College of Saint Rose dropped both ends of a non-conference doubleheader at Molloy College today that allowed the host Lions to take the weekend series following yesterday's 9-4 Golden Knights victory.
Molloy won the opener 3-2 in 10 innings after Saint Rose (3-14) left the bases loaded in the ninth. The Lions then used that momentum towardsa 2-0 triumph in the nightcap.
Senior left fielder Greg Walsh scored on a fielder's choice after drawing a leadoff walk in the 10th to propel Molloy in the first game.
Saint Rose initially appeared to be in good shape. Junior left fielder
Scott Hladik belted a two-run homer over the left field fence to afford the Golden Knights a 2-0 lead after two, but the Lions scored a run in the third and another in the fourth to deadlock it 2-2.
Sophomore right-hander
Chris Gould then put down eight straight and stranded the potential go-ahead run at third in the seventh by inducing back-to-back groundouts. However, Saint Rose could not capitalize in the ninth and thus Gould wound up with a no-decision after scattering six hits throughout 9.0 innings of work. He also retired 17 of the final 19 batters he faced.
In the finale, Molloy manufactured a run in the third and took advantage of a Golden Knights error in the fourth, which proved to be enough support for junior right-hander Anthony Eichhorn who allowed a pair of hits throughout the 7.0 inning distance. Hladik and freshman third baseman
Erik Martin accounted for the two Saint Rose hits.
Looking ahead, the Golden Knights are scheduled to play their home opener next Saturday, March 23 when 11th ranked and
Northeast-10 Conference rival Southern New Hampshire arrives at
Bob Bellizzi Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex for a 12:00 pm doubleheader. Meanwhile, the Lions have a 6:00 pm home date Tuesday versus Dominican College.
