ALBANY – American International held off an early second half run by The College of Saint Rose to upend the Golden Knights 55-48 in a
Northeast-10 Conference game today at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. The Yellow Jackets (14-11/11-10 NE-10) took advantage of 21 Golden Knights turnovers by turning them into 15 points.
Freshman guard
Nicole Bini and sophomore forward
Mariah Lesure each scored nine points to lead Saint Rose (9-16/6-15 NE-10).
Sophomore forward Krista Ferrentino led all scorers with 26 points, while freshman guard Ebony Easter added 15 points thanks to a 9-for-10 effort from the foul line to pace American International.
Saint Rose went into the locker room down 30-24 at the break, but opened the second half with a 13-7 spurt to tie it at 37-37 after sophomore guard
Gabie Polce finished a feed from junior guard Brittany O'Shea and Lesure canned the second of two free throws with 12:13 to go.
The Yellow Jackets responded with six unanswered points, but the Golden Knights topped that with seven straight of their own to go up 44-43 after Bini drained a 3-pointer with 7:07 left. The teams pretty much traded baskets throughout the next three minutes.
Freshman forward
Kelsey Glanzman then scored inside to make it 48-47 with 3:53 to go, but that proved to be the final basket for Saint Rose as the Yellow Jackets closed out the game with eight unanswered points by going 8-for-8 from the stripe during that span.
Prior to today's game, forwards
Kim Van Bourgondien,
Emily Trapp,
Maria Sanchez Gonzalez, and
Jessica Walton were recognized during a pregame ceremony as part of “Senior Day” Festivities.
Looking ahead, both teams close out their 2012-13 regular-season slates with 5:30 pm games this Tuesday. The Golden Knights will travel to New Haven while the Yellow Jackets will head east on the Mass Pike for a date at Assumption in Worcester, MA.
