ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose scored five unanswered points in the final 33 seconds, but ultimately ran out of time in a 73-68 setback to
Northeast-10 Conference rival Pace University this afternoon at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. The Setters (13-10/11-8 NE-10) outscored the Golden Knights 22-15 from the foul line.
Sophomore forward
Mariah Lesure led Saint Rose (9-13/6-12 NE-10) with 17 points, seven rebounds and four blocks throughout 21 minutes off the bench. Sophomore guard
Gabie Polce wound up with 16 points, on 7-for-9 shooting, and six assists; while junior guard
Desiree Simmons finished with 11 points and seven boards.
Senior forward Brittany Shields had a monster day for the Setters behind 31 points, one shy of her career-high, and eight rebounds. Sophomore guard Margo Hackett and senior guard Jessica Scannell tossed in 13 and 10 points respectively.
There were four ties and seven lead changes in the first half before Saint Rose went into the locker room up 34-33 at the break. The Golden Knights shot 56.0 percent (14-for-25) from the floor throughout the opening 20 minutes.
However, Pace opened the second stanza by outscoring Saint Rose 21-10 to take a 10 point, 54-44, lead with 9:28 to play. Sophomore forward Brianna Harris hit a jumper and then Shields converted a layup to cap the run.
Saint Rose cut its deficit to five, 54-49, two minutes later after senior forward
Jessica Walton scored inside. The Golden Knights were then within three, 56-53, when junior guard Brittany O'Shea finished a fast break with 6:33 to go. However, the Setters boosted their advantage back to 10 on two separate occasions while Saint Rose could not get any closer than five in the aforementioned waning seconds.
Looking ahead, both squads have 5:30 pm conference dates on tap for Wednesday. The Setters will entertain Adelphi, while the Golden Knights will travel to Worcester, MA for a meeting at Assumption.
As part of the annual Think Pink and Coaches vs. Cancer game, the College donated $2,078.00 to the
V. Foundation for Cancer Research,
Camp Bravehearts, and the
Susan G. Komen Foundation. The proceeds were derived from today's ticket sales that were subsequently matched by the College.
