Box Score
ALBANY–Merrimack scored the game's lone goal in the 72nd minute to upend The College of Saint Rose 1-0 in
Northeast-10 Conference action today at
Sullivan Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex.
The Golden Knights (3-6/1-5 NE-10) generated some opportunities, but nevertheless dropped its fourth one-goal match of the year, while the Warriors (7-2/5-1 NE-10) chalked up their seventh win in their last eight contests. Merrimack manufactured a 16-9 edge in shots, although the threats-on-target were deadlocked at four apiece.
Regardless, the Warriors took advantage of one of their 18 restarts with 71:08 elapsed. Freshman midfielder Joseph Briers headed home a deflection off the head of sophomore midfielder Augusto Silva in the middle of the area for his second strike this autumn. Sophomore back Ronald Ried lofted a ball from the right flank on the set piece to also pick up an assist.
That proved to be enough. Meanwhile, Saint Rose freshman keeper
Christian Esposito recorded three saves while junior Jose Silva made four at the other end for Merrimack.
Saint Rose had its share of chances, both early and late. Sophomore midfielder
Nick Iuorno created space on the left side and curled a shot from about 25-yards out that floated just outside the far post in the 15th minute. In the 81st, sophomore back
Tyler Pomakoy got his head to a ball in the middle of the area that was subsequently blocked. Senior forward
Juan Garzon then got his head on the ensuing deflection that had Jose Silva scrambling before he just managed to push it over the crossbar.
Saint Rose refused to back down and continued to apply pressure, but ultimately came up short as Jose Silva put a stamp on his third clean sheet of 2013 for the Warriors.
Looking ahead, both squads have 7:00 pm road matches on tap for Wednesday. The Golden Knights will play a non-conference tilt at Roberts Wesleyan in Rochester, while the Warriors will face NE-10 rival Southern New Hampshire in Manchester.
