COLCHESTER, VT – Host Saint Michael's rebounded from a 13 point deficit in the first half to upend The College of Saint Rose 70-59 in a
Northeast-10 Conference contest earlier today at the Ross Sports Center.
Freshman guard
Nicole Bini led Saint Rose (6-11/3-10) behind 13 points that included four, 3-pointers. Meanwhile, senior forward
Emily Trapp tied her career-high with 12 points in 18 minutes off the bench. Junior guard
Desiree Simmons and senior forward
Jessica Walton each hauled in nine rebounds, a season-high for Simmons.
Senior guard Megan Olsen led the Purple Knights' (7-10/5-8) charge behind 31 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the floor and a 7-of-9 performance from the charity stripe. Junior forward Alexa Long added a 'double-double' of 10 points and 12 rebounds. Saint Michael's used 13 steals to help force 22 Saint Rose turnovers that resulted in 28 points.
Two free throws by Trapp with 7:40 left in the first half afforded the Golden Knights a 27-14 lead, the largest for either team in the contest. The remainder of the half resulted in a 25-7 run for the Purple Knights to go into the break with a 39-34 advantage as Olsen scored 19 first half points and Saint Michael's shot 53.6 percent (15-of-28) from the field.
Despite the hole at halftime, Saint Rose was up in both second chance points, 15-4, as well as bench points, 19-4. Sophomore center
Mariah Lesure scored all nine of her points in the opening stanza.
The first 12 minutes of the second half witnessed six leads changes and three ties. After senior forward
Maria Sanchez Gonzalez tied the score at 52 with a jumper, Saint Michael's rallied another run of 18-7 to close out the victory. A second half 12-of-14 (85.7 percent) shooting from the free throw line allowed the Purple Knights to overcome an 8-of-27 (29.6 percent) effort from the field.
Saint Rose returns to the road on Wednesday at 5:30 pm to NE-10 rival face UMass Lowell. Meanwhile, Saint Michael's hosts conference foe Assumption on Tuesday at 5:30 pm as well.
