Box Score

ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose held off a late charge by Northeast-10 Conference rival Merrimack to upend the Warriors 66-65 this evening at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. The Golden Knights (6-10/3-9 NE-10) went 5-for-6 from the foul line during the final minute after junior guard Desiree Simmons came up with a key steal at midcourt.

Simmons finished with a season-high 14 points, on 4-for-6 shooting from the floor, in 36 minutes off the bench for the Golden Knights. Sophomore guard Gabie Polce tossed in 17 points and sophomore center Mariah Lesure had 13 points in 13 minutes of reserve action. Also, senior forward Jessica Walton added five assists and 10 rebounds to go along with six points.

Meanwhile, senior guard Jaclyn Lyons led Merrimack (11-5/7-5 NE-10) with 17 points. Also, freshman guards Ashley Weissmann and Tia Scott wound up with 15 and 13 respectively.

It was a one or two possession game throughout the majority of the second half although Saint Rose trailed, 46-43, with 12:46 to go. However, Walton converted a layup and freshman guard Tyler Hansen drained a trey to put the Golden Knights ahead to stay at 47-46 with 11:29 to go.

Three minutes later, Simmons finished a fast break off a steal from senior forward Maria Sanchez Gonzalez to make it a seven point, 56-49, affair. However, Merrimack responded with an 11-5 spurt to get back to within one, 61-60, after Lyons knocked down one of her three, 3-pointers on the evening.

Neither team managed to score during the ensuing two minutes until Simmons came up her steal and converted two free throws on the play to make it 63-60 Saint Rose. The Golden Knights then took care of business at the foul line before Scott scored a perfunctory layup in the final second for Merrimack.

Looking ahead, both teams have 1:30 pm conference games scheduled for Saturday. The Golden Knights will travel to Colchester, VT to take on Saint Michael's, while Merrimack will entertain American International in North Andover, MA.
