GOLDEN KNIGHTS DEFENSIVE EFFORT CANNOT CONTAIN FRANKLIN PIERCE

Senior keeper James Taber came up with a season-high 10 saves in tonight's NE-10 encounter with Franklin Pierce.
Box Score ALBANY – An outstanding defensive effort backed by some superlative goalkeeping could not contain the defending Northeast-10 Conference Champions as Franklin Pierce scored three times in the second half to upend The College of Saint Rose 3-0 at Sullivan Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex tonight.

The Ravens (5-2/3-1 NE-10) dictated the pace for the majority of the match that allowed them to generate a 22-4 shot advantage, including a 13-3 differential in threats on-target.

However, Saint Rose senior keeper James Taber came up with a season-high 10 saves, most of which had him springing off his feet, to keep things interesting until the final 11 minutes when Franklin Pierce scored twice to remove any doubt of a potential upset.

Taber was on his toes for two outstanding stops in the opening 10 minutes to foreshadow his evening, which benefitted from the play of his backline that consisted of juniors Alan McGrath and Paxton Ballard, sophomore Drew Wingate, and freshman Martin Schlegel.

Regardless, the Ravens finally got one past Taber with 57:38 gone by when graduate forward Ryan Ruffing one-touched a quick feed off the left flank from freshman midfielder Nico Mueller.

Twenty-one minutes later, graduate midfielder Terrence Ciavarra took a square pass from senior midfielder Marc Santos and lined a masterful strike from 35-yards out that skimmed off the right post and into the net. Freshman midfielder Ray Lunga then made a run through the middle before delivering a feed to junior forward Gareth Dudney who finished for a perfunctory goal with three minutes remaining.

Looking ahead, the Golden Knights are off until next Wednesday, October 3 when they will travel to Syracuse for an NE-10 encounter at Le Moyne. Kickoff is set for 4:00 pm in the latest installment of the year-long “Upstate Challenge” rivalry series between the two schools. Meanwhile, the Ravens return home Saturday to face conference rival Saint Anselm at 2:00 pm in Rindge, NH.
