GOLDEN KNIGHTS STRIKE LATE TO HOLD BACK ASSUMPTION

Senior second baseman Nick Polsinelli drove in three runs on four hits to lead the Golden Knights past Assumption today.
Box Score WORCESTER, MA – The College of Saint Rose scored in four of the last five innings to upend host Assumption 8-3 in a Northeast-10 Conference game this afternoon at Rocheleau Field. The Greyhounds (11-24-1/4-17 NE-10) pulled to within 4-3 with a run in the seventh, but the Golden Knights (12-25/5-17 NE-10) answered with a pair  in the eighth and two more in the ninth.

Senior infielder/right-hander Nick Polsinelli made the most of his first start of the year at his customary second base position by going 4-for-5 with three RBI. Meanwhile, freshman right-hander Nick Venier came on with two outs in the seventh and stranded the potential tying run on third. Venier wound up allowing just one hit throughout 2.1 innings of shutout ball to collect his first collegiate save.

Furthermore, sophomore right fielder Brian Maynard finished 3-for-5 with four runs scored, while junior catcher #A.J. Capone had a pair of RBI base hits. Freshman shortstop Ryan Hooker also drove in a pair of runs and senior southpaw Justin Brooks# allowed three runs on eight hits in 6.2 innings of work en route to the win.

As for Assumption, sophomore designated hitter Michael Filice, junior shortstop Shane Keddy, and freshman second baseman Kelvin Sims all had two hits each.

Saint Rose came to bat holding onto a 4-3 lead in the eighth when Maynard got things started with a leadoff base hit followed by a stolen base. Polsinelli then put runners at the corners via an infield single. Hooker subsequently brought across Maynard with a sacrifice and two batters later, Capone slapped a single through the left side that scored Polsinelli to make it 6-3 Golden Knights.

In the ninth, junior designated hitter Caleb Gleason drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a passed ball, stole third and scored on a double play. A Maynard triple to the left-center field gap followed by a Polsinelli double down the left field line closed out the scoring.

Saint Rose initially struck in the third on an RBI base hit by Hooker and then went ahead 3-0 in the fifth on run scoring singles by Polsinelli and Capone. Assumption got one back in the home half of the fifth, but the Golden Knights again boosted their advantage to three runs, 4-1, in the sixth behind yet another RBI single from Polsinelli.

The Greyhounds tacked on a run in the sixth and another in the seventh, but Venier silenced the latter threat and the Golden Knights offense saved its best for last with four runs over the final two innings.

Looking ahead, Assumption has a 3:30 pm date at NE-10 rival Merrimack in North Andover, MA tomorrow. Saint Rose on the other hand returns home for a three-game conference series with Adelphi this weekend. The two squads are scheduled to play a 12:00 pm doubleheader Saturday and then the series finale at 12:00 pm Sunday. The latter will also mark “Senior Day” when eight Saint Rose student-athletes will be recognized.
