TWO SAINT ROSE RALLIES IN FINALE FALL SHORT AT NEW HAVEN

Junior designated hitter Caleb Gleason finished with three hits and four RBI during today's twin-bill at New Haven.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WEST HAVEN, CT – The College of Saint Rose rallied from a 5-0 deficit before host New Haven scored a pair of unearned runs in the eighth inning to take the finale 7-5 after winning the opener 6-4 in a Northeast-10 Conference twin-bill this afternoon at Frank Vieira Field.

The Chargers (18-14-1/9-10-1 NE-10) scored twice in the first and three more times in the fourth before the Golden Knights answered in the fifth inning of game two. Freshman second baseman Ryan Hooker laid down a sacrifice bunt that scored the first run, before RBI base hits by sophomore left fielder Scott Hladik and junior designated hitter Caleb Gleason made it a 5-3 game.

Saint Rose then took advantage of a New Haven error to tie it 5-5 in the eighth, but the Chargers capitalized by scoring twice on a pair of Golden Knights miscues in the bottom half to put themselves back out front.

Freshman left-hander Bryan Carr had another solid outing for Saint Rose. Carr surrendered only one earned run on five hits to go along with five strikeouts throughout 7.0 innings in a no-decision outing. Carr has now allowed only five earned runs throughout his last five starts that cover 28.0 innings of work.

Hladik and Gleason paced the Golden Knights offense with two hits apiece. Meanwhile, junior right fielder Stephen Clout wound up 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a pair of RBI to lead New Haven.

In the first game, Saint Rose cut into a 5-1 deficit in the fifth on a two-run base hit by Gleason that scored junior catcher #A.J. Capone and senior center fielder Nikko Wahl#.

The Chargers got a run back in the home half before the Golden Knights again whittled their deficit to a pair, 6-4, thanks to an RBI groundout by Gleason in the sixth. New Haven junior right-hander Frank Vilacha then retired nine of the next 10 Saint Rose batters throughout the final 3.0 innings to collect his first save of the season.

The Chargers previously scored in both the second and third innings, but Saint Rose made it 2-1 in the fourth when senior first baseman Daniel Marshall stroked a single up the middle that brought across Hladik.

Three New Haven runs made it 5-1 in the fifth, which turned out to be the difference although the Golden Knights had a pair of opportunities to do some damage. However, they left the bases loaded in both the third and fifth innings and wound up stranding 11 runners throughout the game.

Senior right-hander Kris Barone allowed five earned runs on eight hits and fanned eight throughout 8.0 innings on the hill. Wahl reached base four times with a pair of base hits and two walks, while Marshall finished 2-for-4 with an RBI to spearhead Saint Rose.

Clout belted a two-run triple to right in the fourth, while sophomore third baseman Brendon Buckley and junior catcher Joe Romanelli both finished 2-for-4 for the Chargers.

Looking ahead, the two schools are scheduled to conclude their weekend series with a 12:00 pm game tomorrow.
