Last Time Out
Southern Connecticut State scored three times in the eighth and pushed across four more in the ninth to bust open a 2-1 ballgame and subsequently defeat Saint Rose 9-4 in the finale of a three-game Northeast-10 Conference weekend series Sunday afternoon. The Owls thus thwarted an outstanding pitching effort by Saint Rose senior right-hander
Nick Polsinelli who suffered the tough-luck loss. Polsinelli fanned 11 and allowed only three runs, all unearned, on six hits throughout 7.2 innings of work. Junior shortstop
Kyle Charron finished 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI, while junior catcher #A.J. Capone
and sophomore left fielder Scott Hladik# stroked two hits apiece to pace the Golden Knights offense. As for the Owls, senior left fielder Peter Testa drove in four runs on three hits, including a three RBI triple in the eighth, while senior shortstop Sam Greenberg, junior center fielder Mike Cleary, and senior second baseman Kyle Cummings had two hits apiece.
Saint Rose Diamond Notes
Today marks the 'rubber' contest in a three-game series between the two clubs that is tied at 1-1. The first two encounters were decided by a combined three runs. Saint Rose has scored three runs or more in all 11 of its wins this season. The Golden Knights have had 41 batters hit by a pitch this year, which ranks third in the league. Junior designated hitter
Caleb Gleason has at least a hit in 26 of the 30 games he has started this season. Freshman southpaw
Bryan Carr has allowed only four earned runs throughout his last four starts that cover 29.0 innings. Carr has collected 16 strikeouts over that span and owns a 3-1 record. Polsinelli has fanned 31 and issued 10 walks in 31.2 innings of work.
Le Moyne Diamond Notes
Le Moyne has won four in a row on the strength of a three-game sweep versus the University of New Haven over the weekend. The Dolphins are ranked #16 in the latest
Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II Poll. Junior right fielder Zack Wiley, senior center fielder Brett Botsford and senior infielder Matt Marra are among the top-15 hitters in the league by average. Wiley leads the way with a .363 average (45-for-124), while Botsford is right behind him (.361). As a team, Le Moyne is among the NE-10 leaders in just about every major offensive category. The Dolphins have chalked up 253 runs, 222 RBI, 164 walks and 28 homers, which all pace the conference. They are also hitting a collective .305 and own a .400 on-base percentage.
Upstate Challenge
Saint Rose and Le Moyne are nearing the conclusion of the year-long rivalry series known as the '
Upstate Challenge.' Beginning last fall, the two schools will square off in 14 sports in which the schools compete head-to-head in the regular season or during the NE-10 Championship. The Golden Knights own a commanding 7.5-4.5 advantage and have thus locked up the first 'Upstate Challenge' trophy.
