SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STRIKES LATE TO UPEND SAINT ROSE

Senior right-hander Nick Polsinelli fanned 11 and did not allow an earned run throughut 7.0 innings of work today.
Box Score ALBANY – Southern Connecticut State scored three times in the eighth and pushed across four more in the ninth to bust open a 2-1 ballgame and subsequently defeat The College of Saint Rose 9-4 in the finale of a three-game Northeast-10 Conference weekend series this afternoon at Bob Bellizzi Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex.

The Owls (23-11/10-6 NE-10) thus thwarted an outstanding pitching effort by Saint Rose senior right-hander Nick Polsinelli who suffered the tough-luck loss. Polsinelli fanned 11 and allowed only three runs, all unearned, on six hits throughout 7.2 innings of work.

Junior shortstop Kyle Charron finished 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI, while junior catcher #A.J. Capone and sophomore left fielder Scott Hladik# stroked two hits apiece to pace the Golden Knights offense.

As for the Owls, senior left fielder Peter Testa drove in four runs on three hits, including a three RBI triple in the eighth, while senior shortstop Sam Greenberg, junior center fielder Mike Cleary, and senior second baseman Kyle Cummings had two hits apiece. Sophomore right-hander Rocco Cundari gave up a run on seven hits in 7.0 innings of action to improve to 4-3 this spring. Senior first baseman Ryan Geffert added a solo home run in the ninth.

Saint Rose (11-21/4-13 NE-10) took a 1-0 lead in the first on a Hladik RBI base hit, but wound up leaving three runners on that proved to be an ominous foreshadow. The Owls then took a 2-1 lead an inning later on an RBI groundout by sophomore designated hitter T.J Shea and a Testa run scoring single.

Polsinelli subsequently settled in and gave up just four hits throughout the next five-plus innings. Meanwhile, the Golden Knights left runners in scoring position in the fifth, sixth and seventh frames.

The Owls finally took advantage by boosting their lead to 5-1 in the eighth via Testa's triple, before tacking on four more in the ninth courtesy of three Saint Rose fielding miscues.

Despite trailing 9-1, Saint Rose refused to go quietly in the last frame. Capone smacked a run-scoring single and Charron ripped a two-run double down the left field line to make things interesting, but Southern Connecticut State freshman southpaw Pat Egan finally retired the next two Golden Knights hitters to end the ballgame.

Looking ahead, the both teams have divisional conference home contests on tap for Tuesday. The Golden Knights will welcome Le Moyne at 3:30 pm for a meeting that will be webcast on www.gogoldenknights.tv. The Owls on the other hand will entertain cross-town rival New Haven for a 2:00 pm start.
