GOLDEN KNIGHTS POUND OUT 17 HITS TO GAIN SPLIT WITH SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT

Junior designated hitter Caleb Gleason drove in four runs in today's finale versus Southern Connecticut.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose pounded out 17 hits in the finale after dropping the opener when visiting Southern Connecticut State scored four times in the ninth to gain a split with the Owls in a Northeast-10 Conference twin-bill this afternoon at Bob Bellizzi Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex. The Golden Knights (11-20/4-12 NE-10) took game two 15-2 after falling 9-6 in the matinee.

Freshman left-hander Bryan Carr allowed just one run on two hits and fanned six throughout 6.0 innings of work in the second game to improve to 3-1 on the year. Sophomore left fielder Brian Maynard went 3-for-4 and drove in five runs while junior designated hitter Caleb Gleason finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and a pair of runs scored to lead the Saint Rose attack. Also, junior second baseman Kyle Charron had a double and two base hits.

The Golden Knights pounced with five runs in the first and four more in the second to provide more than enough breathing room for Carr. Sophomore third baseman Jevonte Osterhout laced a three-run triple to the right-centerfield gap to highlight the first and Maynard brought across three more runs in the second with a double to left.

Saint Rose added three more in the fourth thanks to an RBI triple by Gleason, an RBI double by Maynard and an RBI base hit by sophomore right fielder Justin Lewis in succession. An RBI single by sophomore catcher Scott Hladik in the fifth followed by a Gleason two run base hit an inning later accounted for the final three runs.

Senior left fielder Peter Testa finished with a double and a triple to pace Southern Connecticut State (22-11/9-6 NE-10).

In the opener, the Owls rallied from a 6-5 deficit in the ninth by scoring four runs  on three hits with a three-run triple by Testa doing most of the damage

Saint Rose previously bounced back from a 5-2 deficit by scoring four times in the sixth to take the lead heading into the ninth after Maynard ripped an RBI single, senior first baseman Daniel Marshall scored on a wild pitch and junior catcher #A.J. Capone#, who finished 3-for-5, delivered two more runs with a base hit.

Neither team got much going in the seventh and eighth frames, which set the stage for a dramatic ninth.

Senior shortstop Sam Greenberg drove in three runs as did Testa to pace the Southern Connecticut attack.

Charron had two more hits for the Golden Knights, while senior right-hander Kris Barone allowed five runs, none earned, on five hits and struck out seven throughout 7.0 innings of work in a no-decision outing.

Looking ahead, the two teams are scheduled to conclude their three-game weekend series with a 12:00 pm start tomorrow at Bellizzi Field.
