SAINT ROSE DROPS BOTH ENDS OF TWIN-BILL TO MERRIMACK

Sophomore third baseman Jevonte Osterhout belted a three-run homer over the left field fence in today's first game versus Northeast-10 Conference rival Merrimack.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ALBANY – Merrimack scored a pair of unearned runs in the nightcap for what proved to be enough to complete a sweep of The College of Saint Rose in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader this afternoon at Bob Bellizzi Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex. The Warriors (11-11/2-2 NE-10) previously scored a run in the eighth and another in the ninth to take the first game 9-7 and then won the finale 2-0.

Junior third baseman Jevonte Osterhout drove a three-run homer over the left field fence in the bottom half of the sixth to knot the matinee 7-7, after the Golden Knights (6-12/0-4 NE-10) twice previously tied the game following 2-0 and 4-2 deficits. However, Merrimack senior first baseman Tim Curran and freshman shortstop Casey Cotter smacked back-to-back doubles in the eighth to make it 8-7, before sophomore left fielder Alex Ciullo added an RBI base hit in the ninth to close out the scoring.

Sophomore right fielder Brian Maynard had a two-run base hit that dead-locked the game 2-2 in the bottom of the first. The Golden Knights then took advantage of a passed ball and a wild pitch to knot the game 4-4 in the third. Merrimack scored again in the fourth and pushed across another pair in the sixth to go up 7-4. Osterhout tied it with his shot in the sixth.

Junior second baseman Kyle Charron and senior shortstop Alex Ferenti both had a pair of hits out of the first two spots in batting order to pace the Golden Knights offensively. Meanwhile, Cotter and Curran combined to go 8-for-9 with eight runs scored, three RBI and three walks to lead the Warriors.

In the nightcap, Saint Rose sophomore right-hander Ryan Harper and Merrimack freshman righty Joe Carnevale battled each other through eight innings. Harper scattered three hits and fanned five over 8.1 innings of work in a tough-luck loss. Carnevale surrendered just three hits as well during 8.0 innings to improve to 2-1 on the season. Merrimack junior right-hander Beau Batchelor came on in the ninth and after allowing a base hit, induced a game-ending double play to collect his second save.

Junior designated hitter Caleb Gleason had a pair of singles to extend his hitting streak to 14 games, while junior catcher #A.J. Capone# threw out three runners attempting to steal second throughout the two contests for the Golden Knights.

Also, this afternoon marked “Cancer Awareness Day” at the Plumeri Sports Complex as the baseball, softball and men's lacrosse teams each did their part for the cause. Members of the baseball squad specifically wore blue shoe laces and their pants up in order to raise awareness of prostate cancer.

Looking ahead, both Saint Rose and Merrimack have 3:30 pm NE-10 road games scheduled for Wednesday. The Golden Knights will head to Worcester, MA to take on Assumption, while the Warriors will travel to Waltham, MA to visit Bentley.
