SAINT ROSE KNOCKS OFF NE-10 LEADER ADELPHI

Senior forward Brian Hanuschak became the 26th player in school annals to score 1,000 career points
Box Score ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose men's basketball team converted four consecutive free throws in the waning moments to seal a 65-61 victory over Northeast-10 Conference leader Adelphi University tonight at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. The Golden Knights have now won two of their last three games, while the Panthers had their three-game winning streak snapped to fall into a first-place tie with Franklin Pierce University.

Senior forward Brian Hanuschak led four players in double-figures for Saint Rose (5-17/5-13 NE-10) with 14 points. He furthermore became the 26th player in school annals to score 1,000 career points. Sophomore forward Dominykas Milka tossed in 12 points in just 16 minutes of reserve duty, while sophomore guard Kareem Thomas and senior forward Sheldon Griffin added 11 and 10 points respectively.

Senior guard Robert Johnson provided 23 points for Adelphi (16-6/13-5 NE-10) to lead all scorers. Senior guard Richard Harkins contributed 12 points, six boards and five assists as well.

The Golden Knights got out of the blocks quickly and scored seven unanswered points midway through the first period to take a 15-7 lead. Hanuschak started things with a layup and then junior guard Andre Pope drained a 3-pointer and a jumper to cap things at the 10:59 mark.

The Panthers responded with a 16-7 run of their own to grab a 23-22 edge with 3:25 left until intermission following a steal and a layup by Harkins. Two ties and a like number of lead changes ensued over the next three minutes. Griffin knotted things at 26-26 via a pair of free throws and then Pope sent Saint Rose into the locker room on a high note after he buried a deep ball as the first half buzzer sounded.

The Golden Knights carried that momentum into the second half and built an 11-point, 50-39, cushion after Milka finished in the paint with 10:06 remaining. Adelphi managed only three field goals during a seven minute span while Saint Rose manufactured its largest lead of the game. Johnson finally got the Panthers going with a 3-pointer that sparked a 13-2 jaunt to make things interesting down the stretch.

With the Golden Knights clinging to a 61-57 edge with 1:28 to go, junior forward Bradley Simpson buried a jumper off an inbounds pass. After Saint Rose came up empty on its next possession, Griffin secured a rebound off a Johnson miss with four seconds left and thus the Golden Knights began their parade to the foul line. Gutierrez knocked down a pair, which preceded two from Harkins at the other end. Milka finally put things away when he went 2-for-2 to provide the final margin.

During halftime, more than 40 Saint Rose student-athletes were recognized for their outstanding athletic achievement during the past 12 months.

Both squads get back to league action Saturday. The Golden Knights have a 3:30 pm date at Pace University in Pleasantville, while the Panthers return home to host Assumption.
