GOLDEN KNIGHTS SURVIVE IN OT AT LE MOYNE

Senior guard Ola Shajuyigbe scored 14 points, all in the second half tonight
Box Score SYRACUSE – The College of Saint Rose women's basketball team clawed back from an 11-point second half deficit and then scored eight unanswered points in overtime to upend host Le Moyne College 68-65 in a Northeast-10 Conference game tonight at Ted Grant Court. The Golden Knights thus swept the regular-season series for the fourth year in a row and earned another valuable point in the year-long 'Upstate Challenge' between the two schools.

Senior guard Ashley Rath was one of three players in twin-figures for Saint Rose (13-7/10-6 NE-10). Rath finished with 17 points, including a pair of free throws with 18 seconds left in regulation to send things into an extra session. Fellow senior guard Ola Shajuyigbe wound up with 14 points, all in the second half, while freshman guard Gabie Polce contributed 11 points and six assists.

Le Moyne (6-14/3-13 NE-10) senior guard Morgan Rowland led all players with 23 points. Senior center Emma Cronk ended up with a “double-double” behind 21 points and 13 rebounds as well.

The Golden Knights dug themselves an early deficit by going scoreless throughout the opening 5:28. They came to live shortly after and got to within a point, 11-10, when junior forward Emily Trapp finished in the paint with 9:51 left. However, Saint Rose continued to hurt itself by coughing it up 14 times in the first half. The Dolphins engineered 13 points off those miscues on the way to a 28-22 lead at the break.

Le Moyne extended its margin to double-digits, 35-25, when the Golden Knights began to find their touch from long range. Shajuyigbe nailed back-to-back 3-pointers to jumpstart a 17-8 run to get Saint Rose back even. Shajuyigbe buried another deep ball and then Rath tossed in one of her own that made it a 43-43 affair midway through the second stanza.

Neither club gained more than a three-point edge the rest of the period. Cronk initially gave the Dolphins a 58-56 advantage with 1:27 on the clock after going 3-for-4 from the line. Rath knocked down a pair with 18 seconds left and then Cronk missed a jumper down the stretch that led to overtime.

Cronk drew first blood in the extra period, but Rath set off an 8-0 outburst that allowed Saint Rose to seize control. Trapp helped put the finishing touches on the jaunt with a jumper and then Polce hit two free throws to put the Golden Knights up six, 66-60, with 25 seconds to go. Rowland hit a 'three' at the other end to keep it a one possession game, but Trapp splashed a pair from the stripe to remove all doubt about the final outcome.

Saint Rose wound up 7-for-10 from the arc in the second half after missing both of its opportunities in the first period. Conversely, Le Moyne was held to just 17.6 percent (3-for-17) shooting from deep in the game.

Both teams are scheduled to hit the court again Saturday afternoon. The Golden Knights play host to Southern Connecticut State University, while the Dolphins head to Assumption College. Both games are slated to tip-off at 1:30 pm.
