ALBANY -
The College of Saint Rose women's tennis team returns to action this afternoon as the Golden Knights host Saint Anselm College at 1:00 pm in a Northeast-10 Conference match. Saint Rose won its season-opener seven days ago, while the Hawks are set to open their league schedule this afternoon.
LAST MEETING (April 10, 2011)
Saint Rose suffered a 6-3 setback in its regular-season finale at NE-10 rival Saint Anselm last April 10.
After dropping a tough first doubles match, the Golden Knights claimed their first point of the afternoon in the second doubles flight as the pair of junior
Jennifer Crego and Kimberly Schacher defeated Lauren DeGugliemo and sophomore Katherine Morrissey 8-3.
Later in the first singles flight, Crego earned her second victory of the day by defeating junior Alexandra Lawrence 7-5, 6-2. The Golden Knights picked up their final decision of the afternoon in the sixth singles flight where sophomore
Stephanie Wilhelm topped Vanessa Centofanti 6-3, 6-0.
SCOUTING SAINT ROSE (1-0/1-0 NE-10)
The Golden Knights are coming off of a 6-3 triumph versus Franklin Pierce in their 2011-12 season-opener last Saturday. Saint Rose plays its second of five straight home matches to start the season this afternoon against Saint Anselm hoping to snap a six-match skid against the Hawks.
Crego and Wilhelm, who garnered All-Conference accolades a year ago, got their campaigns off on a high note last Saturday. They each earned victories in singles action. Wilhelm also teamed up with senior co-captain
Erin Reeg for a triumph at #2 doubles.
Freshman
Lauren Romine joined Wilhelm as the lone Saint Rose players to go unbeaten in both singles and doubles action a week ago. Romine, who also made her debut in a Golden Knights uniform, came away with wins at #3 doubles and #5 singles.
SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM (0-0/0-0 NE-10)
The Hawks are set to open their respective 2011-12 schedule this afternoon. Saint Anselm is coming off of a 7-7 overall mark in addition to an appearance in the quarterfinal round of the NE-10 Tournament last spring. The Hawks wound up finishing seventh in the final league standings.
Senior Amanda Brahm and sophomore Katherine Morrissey are the squad's top returnees from a year ago. Brahm went 7-6 in singles action where see held down the #3 spot in the lineup. She was also a collective 6-5 in doubles play. Morrissey closed out the year with a 4-7 mark in the middle of the singles order.
UP NEXT
Saint Rose has a week to prepare for its next league match. The Golden Knights are set to welcome Saint Michael's College to Albany for an 11:00 am start on Saturday to kick off Homecoming/Hall of Fame Weekend at the College. Saint Anselm continues its westward swing tomorrow when the Hawks head to Le Moyne College for an 11:00 am NE-10 contest in Syracuse.
