SPRINGFIELD, MA – The College of Saint Rose rallied from 4-2 and 7-5 deficits, but host American International pushed across the winning run with two outs in the 10th inning to upend the Golden Knights 8-7 today at AIC Park. In the process, the Yellow Jackets (15-21/9-11 NE-10) avenged Tuesday's 9-4 Northeast-10 Conference setback at Saint Rose (14-23/7-13).
Senior first baseman Dillon Fontaine drove a double to the gap in left-center that scored freshman third baseman Cam MacDonald from first with the decisive run after MacDonald reached on a leadoff walk.
The Golden Knights previously pushed across a pair runs in their half of the ninth to force the extra frame. Freshman third baseman
Jevonte Osterhout stroked a double down the left field line that advanced freshman outfielder
Nikko Wahl to third after Wahl worked a pinch-hit walk two batters earlier. Senior center fielder
Ryan Price then lofted a sacrifice fly to right that scored Wahl and senior right fielder
Garret Keenan slapped a single through the left single that brought in Osterhout with the tying run.
Saint Rose had the go-ahead runner on third in the 10th when freshman outfielder
Brian Maynard belted a pinch hit double, but American International junior right-hander Tim Bailey induced a pair of fly outs to strand Maynard at third.
Price, Osterhout and sophomore left fielder
Caleb Gleason had two hits apiece to lead the Golden Knights offense. The latter had a two-run base hit in the third that tied the ballgame 4-4, while Osterhout crossed home plate three times throughout the afternoon. Junior second baseman
Brandon Jones had a solo home run in the sixth that put the Golden Knights ahead 5-4, before junior center fielder Mike Tranghese belted a three-run shot in the seventh to put American International up 7-5.
Freshman left-hander
Tom Buckley continued to shine out of the bullpen for Saint Rose. Buckley tossed 2.2 innings of no-hit ball to lower his ERA to 0.47 on the year. He has not allowed a run in his last six appearances.
Tranghese and Fontaine both wound up 2-for-5 with eight RBI collectively to pace the Yellow Jackets.
Looking ahead, both teams have league noon doubleheaders on tap for tomorrow. The Golden Knights will welcome Bentley to Bob Bellizzi Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex, while the Yellow Jackets have a road date at UMass Lowell.
