ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose baseball team fell victim to a pair of solid pitching performances by visiting Dominican College this evening that allowed the Chargers to sweep a non-conference doubleheader at Bob Bellizzi Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex. Dominican exploded for nine runs throughout the first three innings to take the opener 11-6. The Golden Knights stranded 10 base runners and had a seventh-inning rally come up short to fall 6-5 in the nightcap.
Dominican (19-10) pounded out 12 hits in the opener. Graduate third baseman Michael Levy, Jr. scored on an error after belting a leadoff triple in the first. Senior shortstop Marco Moreno then delivered a two-run single to get the Chargers in front 3-0.
Saint Rose (12-17) answered with three runs of its own in the bottom half. Freshman center fielder
Brian Maynard, who smacked a leadoff double, came across on a fielder's choice. The Golden Knights then took advantage of a costly Dominican error that led to a pair of runs to knot things 3-3.
The Chargers proceeded to plate five runs in the second and another in the third, which seemingly put things out of reach. Sophomore first baseman Andrew Camardella highlighted things with a three-run double. That proved to be enough support for sophomore right-hander Caleb Whiteley, who fanned nine and scattered eight hits over the distance.
Maynard paced Saint Rose with a 2-for-4 effort at the plate. Junior right fielder
Garret Keenan finished 2-for-3 with a run, while junior second baseman
Brandon Jones was 2-for-3 as well.
Levy, Jr. was a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs and reached base in all five plate appearances to lead Dominican. Moreno wound up 2-for-3 with three RBI, while Camardella was 1-for-3 with three RBI and scored twice.
The Chargers grabbed a 1-0 edge in the nightcap. However, the Golden Knights evened things 1-1 thanks to back-to-back doubles by sophomore catcher #A.J. Capone
and senior first baseman Grant Smith#.
Dominican then manufactured a pair with two outs in the fifth and tacked on three more in the seventh to go up 6-1. Senior right fielder Dan Robinson laced an RBI single to left field to break the deadlock. Camardella followed with an infield single that allowed senior second baseman Mario Lopez to score from second.
Lopez added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly and then Levy, Jr. scored on a wild pitch. Camardella capped things with the most important run of the ballgame for the Chargers via an RBI double.
Sophomore third baseman
Carlos Fermin sparked a two-out rally for Saint Rose in the final frame with a single through the left side. He later scored on an RBI single by Capone. Smith then knocked in a pair with a double to right center, which got the tying run into scoring position. Freshman southpaw Jordan Paszek induced a ground ball to complete the sweep for Dominican and cap a complete-game bid.
Smith finished 3-for-4 with three RBI to lead the Saint Rose attack. Capone and Keenan each went 2-for-4. Camardella smacked a single and a double to finish as the lone Charger with multiple-hits in the contest.
Both clubs return to their respective conference schedules tomorrow. Saint Rose welcomes Southern New Hampshire University for a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader at noon. Meanwhile, Dominican heads to Bloomfield College for a pair of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference encounters.
