GOLDEN KNIGHTS FALL TO #5 SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT IN 2011 HOME OPENER

Sophomore Caleb Gleason had an RBI pinch hit single in the ninth inning of today's game versus #5 Southern Connecticut.
ALBANY – A second inning miscue that led to four unearned runs helped spoil the 2011 home opener for The College of Saint Rose, which fell 8-4 to fifth-ranked and Northeast-10 Conference rival Southern Connecticut State today at Bob Bellizzi Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex.

The Owls (20-0/5-0 NE-10), who are off to their best start in school history, eventually added two more runs in the fifth and another pair in the eighth, before the Golden Knights (5-10/0-4 NE-10) scored three times in the ninth after pushing one across in the seventh.

Senior catcher Nick Dowen and freshman third baseman Jevonte Osterhout had two hits apiece for Saint Rose. Freshman designated hitter Brian Maynard belted an RBI triple to right in the seventh, while sophomore Caleb Gleason stroked a bases loaded single to left field in the ninth.

Meanwhile, Southern Connecticut State junior left-hander Chris Zbin allowed a run on six hits and fanned six throughout 7.0 innings of work to run his record to 5-0 on the year. Offensively, senior left fielder Kyle Rosadino went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a triple to lead a balanced Owls attack that featured five players with at least two hits on the day.

Looking ahead, both teams have road dates on tap for Wednesday. Saint Rose has a 3:00 pm non-conference appointment at Dominican College in Orangeburg, while the Owls have a 3:30 pm game at conference rival American International in Springfield.
