ALBANY – For the fourth time this year, five players reached double-figures in scoring to lead a balanced attack for The College of Saint Rose as the Golden Knights cemented an 84-76 victory over American International College today at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. Saint Rose thus avenged a 47-45 setback against the Yellow Jackets on January 2 and halted a six-game win streak by American International, which entered the game tied for second in the Northeast-10 Conference standings.
The Yellow Jackets (16-6/12-5 NE-10) scored six unanswered points to start the game, but the Golden Knights methodically whittled their deficit before finally taking an 11-10 lead at the 13:56 mark following a trey by sophomore guard
Andre Pope. Six ties and a like number of lead changes ensued over the next nine minutes until junior guard
Shea Bromirski buried a 3-pointer of his own to put Saint Rose ahead to stay, 28-25, with 4:57 left in the opening frame.
Bromirski's deep ball actually sparked a 16-6 run for the Golden Knights that afforded them a 41-31 lead at the break. He wound up capping things with four consecutive free throws to close out the Saint Rose scoring.
The Golden Knights (15-7/10-7 NE-10) picked up right where they left off to start the second half. Saint Rose outscored American International 20-10 throughout the first eight minutes, which provided the Golden Knights with a commanding 61-41 cushion with 12 minutes left. Junior guard
Rob Gutierrez scored five straight points and then Pope punctuated things with another 3-pointer.
Saint Rose maintained its double-digit margin, although the Yellow Jackets provided a bit of a scare down the stretch. Sophomore guard Ricky Hudson buried a 'three' to key a 10-0 spurt that brought American International back to within six, 82-76, with 45 seconds to go. However, Pope buried a pair of free throws and then Gutierrez secured a missed 3-point attempt by Hudson that allowed the Golden Knights to run out the clock.
Gutierrez led the way for Saint Rose with 24 points and eight rebounds. Junior forwards
Brian Hanuschak and
Sheldon Griffin added 11 points apiece, while Bromirski and freshman forward
Dominykas Milka contributed 10 and nine points respectively.
Junior guard Isiah Wallace paced American International with 20 points despite battling foul trouble for much of the afternoon. Fellow junior guard Adrian Hynes-Guery was right behind him with 19 points.
Both squads have a pair of league games on the schedule this week. The Yellow Jackets travel to Le Moyne College on Tuesday, while Saint Rose heads to Adelphi University on Wednesday. Both games are scheduled to tip-off at 7:30 pm.
