STRONG SECOND HALF PROPELS GOLDEN KNIGHTS PAST HOST ASSUMPTION

Junior guard Shea Bromirski knocked down six, 3-pointers on the way to 22 points in tonight's 74-61 triumph at Assumption.
WORCESTER, MA – The College of Saint Rose outscored host Assumption 51-35 by shooting a staggering 70.0 percent (21-for-30) from the floor during the second half en route to a 74-61 Northeast-10 Conference victory tonight at Laska Gymnasium. In the process, the Golden Knights (14-7/9-7 NE-10) snapped a season long three-game skid, while the host Greyhounds (10-12/7-9 NE-10) fell for only the third time throughout 10 home dates this year.

Junior guards Shea Bromirski and Rob Gutierrez combined for 30 points after intermission to lead Saint Rose, which had only five turnovers during the final 20 minutes. Bromirski wound up with 22 points on the strength of six 3-pointers, while Gutierrez tossed in 14 after being held scoreless throughout the first stanza.

Saint Rose overcame a five point, 28-23, deficit in the opening moments of the second half by going on a 20-8 run during the ensuing seven minutes that yielded a seven point, 43-36 lead with 12:45 remaining. Bromirski sandwiched the outburst with a pair of 3-pointers.

Assumption responded with four unanswered points to get back to within three, 43-40, a minute later and the Golden Knights advantage subsequently swayed between two and four points during the next six minutes. Assumption senior forward Mike Baldarelli eventually finished inside, after the Golden Knights came up empty on their two previous possessions, to make it a four point, 56-52, affair with five minutes remaining.

Saint Rose refused to allow Assumption to get any closer though as an 8-2 jaunt put the Golden Knights in the driver's seat via a 10 point, 64-54, cushion with 3:01 showing on the clock. Two layups from Gutierrez, a jumper in the paint by Bromirski and inside score from junior forward Brian Hanuschak accounted for the spurt. An exclamation dunk by Hanuschak, followed by two free throws each from Gutierrez and sophomore guard Andre Pope sealed the victory down the stretch.

Junior forward Sheldon Griffin finished with 10 points; while Pope tied his career-high of eight assists to go with eight points and six rebounds to help the Saint Rose cause. Pope also committed only one turnover. Hanuschak finished with nine points and six boards and freshman guard Kareem Thomas added seven points in 17 minutes off the bench.

Baldarelli paced Assumption with 18 points and six rebounds. Sophomore forward Ronson Quick and junior forward Tim Beinert added 12 and 10 points respectively.

Looking ahead, both squads have 3:30 pm league dates on tap for Saturday. The Golden Knights will host American International, while the Greyhounds have a rendezvous with Pace University in Pleasantville.
