Box Score
NEW HAVEN, CT – Junior guard Camille Fantini drilled a 3-pointer from the top of the arc with 4.9 seconds remaining and host Southern Connecticut State University held on for a 64-63 Northeast-10 Conference victory over The College of Saint Rose today at Moore Fieldhouse. It marked the first setback of the year for the Golden Knights, while the Owls snapped a mild two-game skid of their own.
Senior guard
Ashley Rath gave Saint Rose (4-1/2-1 NE-10) a 63-61 edge when she converted a layup as she was fouled with 22 seconds to go. Fantini hauled in the rebound off Rath's ensuing free throw attempt and then took things into her own hands with her fourth trey of the game. Rath got one last look before the buzzer, but her shot rolled off the front rim.
Rath led the Golden Knights in scoring for the third time this year with 18 points. Freshman guard
Gabie Polce wound up with 14 points, while junior forward
Emily Trapp added eight points and 10 boards.
Sophomore forward Moni Smith-Ocran had an outstanding effort for Southern Connecticut. She finished with a “double-double” behind 21 points and 17 rebounds. Fantini tossed in 16 points as well.
Saint Rose walked into the locker room up three, 35-32, after shooting 54.2 percent (13-for-24) from the floor throughout the opening 20 minutes. Six ties and five lead changes ensued during the second half, although neither side led by more than five points during that span.
The Golden Knights actually found themselves down a pair, 61-59, with 2:25 left. However, senior guard
Ola Shajuyigbe picked up a steal and score prior to Rath's layup in the waning moments. Saint Rose was somewhat hampered by 24 turnovers that led to 24 points for the Owls. Southern Connecticut also held a 20-9 differential on the offensive glass.
Both clubs return to action Wednesday night with a pair of 5:30 league games on tap. The Golden Knights head to Adelphi University, while the Owls are scheduled to host Pace University.
