ALBANY – Visiting Le Moyne College lit up the scoreboard twice within a span of 15 minutes that bridged the first and second half on the way to a 2-0 Northeast-10 Conference victory over The College of Saint Rose men's soccer team tonight at Sullivan Field.
The Dolphins also grabbed their first point in the year-long
'Upstate Challenge', a series in which the two schools will square off in 14 sports in which the schools compete head-to-head in the regular season or during the Northeast-10 Conference Championship. The winner of the series will be awarded the first 'Upstate Challenge' trophy.
Senior midfielder Jesse Carr broke a 0-0 deadlock for Le Moyne in the 35th minute on a strike that appeared as if it was going to sail wide of the frame. Carr dribbled into space in the center of the field and then let go a low, driving shot from 25-yards out that found the lower left corner of the net.
In the 50th, sophomore forward Michael Spadine gave the Dolphins a 2-0 cushion with his seventh marker of the year. Spadine, who entered the contest tied for third in the NE-10 in goals, was sent in all alone by freshman midfielder Casey Murphy and made the most of his one-on-one opportunity.
Le Moyne finished with a 10-8 advantage in shots and held a 7-3 margin in corners. Meanwhile, two of the top-five keepers in the conference on the saves list did their best to keep their respective sides within reach. Saint Rose senior keeper
Patrik Ohlsson turned aside three shots, while sophomore keeper Matthew Silva stopped four shots for the Dolphins.
Up next, Saint Rose hits the road Saturday for a league match at UMass Lowell. Kickoff is set for 1:00 pm. Le Moyne will make the trek east to Bentley University for an NE-10 contest in Waltham, MA at noon.
