ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose overcame a series of early forays by visiting Concordia to collect its first win of the season behind a 1-0 non-conference victory versus the Clippers tonight at Sullivan Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex.
The Golden Knights (1-9) countered three shots-on-goal by Concordia during the opening five minutes with a strike from junior forward
Giancarlo Montenegro with 28:09 elapsed that stood up as the game-winner. Freshman midfielder
Drew Wingate initiated the chance by driving a shot that forced Concordia freshman keeper Oscar Acosta-Mendez to fall off balance while deflecting the ball back to Montenegro who calmly finished.
Acosta-Mendez wound up with four saves for the Clippers (2-7), while senior
Patrik Ohlsson recorded a season-high nine saves for the Golden Knights (1-9), who were outshot by a 16-10 margin, including a 9-5 differential in on-target threats.
Ohlsson was at his best throughout the second half when Saint Rose also had a few chances for an insurance marker. Ohlsson got off to his feet to deflect a threat by junior midfielder Mario Fantozzi over the crossbar with 72 minutes gone by. In the 81st minute, he calmly gathered in a direct kick from just outside the area that was struck by senior midfielder Richard Heredia.
As for the Golden Knights chances, sophomore midfielder
Dylan Klippenstein placed a low cross from the left flank that senior midfielder
Taras Panchishak flicked just over the cross bar with 55 minutes elapsed. In the 82nd minute, Wingate had plenty of space inside the area for an uncontested shot that sailed high.
Fortunately, it proved moot as Montenegro's goal allowed Saint Rose to play with lead for most of the contest.
Looking ahead, Saint Rose returns home Wednesday for a 6:30 pm Northeast-10 Conference match versus Le Moyne as the two schools continue their season-long
Upstate Challenge. The contest will be streamed live on
