EASTON, MA – The College of Saint Rose men's soccer team held host Stonehill College at bay throughout regulation, but the Skyhawks struck for the game's lone goal midway through the second overtime period to walk away with a 1-0 Northeast-10 Conference triumph today in Easton. Stonehill has now won four of its last five games, while the Golden Knights suffered their fourth straight one-goal loss.
Senior midfielder Ross McWilliams knocked home a cross from junior forward Anthony Campagnano at the 105:45 mark to secure things for Stonehill (9-7/6-5 NE-10). It was the fifth marker of the year for McWilliams, who also struck for his team-leading third game-winner of the season.
After being frustrated by the unwillingness of Saint Rose (1-15/0-12 NE-10) to buckle throughout regulation, the Skyhawks stepped up their pressure throughout the overtime periods to capitalize on an outstanding chance in the second extra session. Stonehill did not surrender a shot to the Golden Knights over that span, but generated six of its own during extra time.
Senior keeper
Patrik Ohlsson did his best to keep Saint Rose even. Ohlsson chalked up a season-high 11 saves while patrolling the penalty area with authority. Meanwhile, freshmen netminder Adam Colella turned aside three shots en route to his fourth clean sheet of the year.
Looking ahead, Saint Rose has six days to prepare for its 2011 regular-season finale next Friday. The Golden Knights are scheduled to host Merrimack College at 4:00 pm. Stonehill travels to Saint Anselm College Tuesday night for a 7:30 pm kickoff in Manchester, NH.
