SAINT ROSE FALLS IN 11 INNINGS IN OPENER OF DH AT UMASS LOWELL

Senior shortstop Zachary Halloran went 2-for-5 in the opener and doubled in the nightcap at UMass Lowell today.
LOWELL, MA – The College of Saint Rose dropped the opener 4-1 in 11 innings and then suffered a 10-1 setback in the nightcap of a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader at UMass Lowell today.

Sophomore first baseman Mark Sanborn belted a three-run homer in the 11th to lift UMass Lowell in the first game. The Golden Knights (7-19/2-8 NE-10) had a chance to go ahead in the ninth when senior catcher Derek Marshall doubled and advanced to third on a sacrifice, but freshman pinch runner Justin Lewis was called out at home on a fielder's choice.

Senior shortstop Zachary Halloran went 2-for-5 and junior right fielder Garret Keenan stroked an RBI base hit in the third that tied the game 1-1 after UMass Lowell had gone up 1-0 an inning earlier.

Junior right-hander Doug Dulin allowed a run on five hits and fanned nine throughout 5.1 innings of work, before giving way to junior southpaw David Batchelder who tossed 3.2 innings of scoreless baseball.

UMass Lowell (15-11/4-6 NE-10) sophomore left-hander Jack Leathersich allowed a run on four hits and whiffed seven during 8.0 innings, while senior right-hander Matt Monico surrendered just two hits in 3.0 innings to run his record to 2-1 on the year.

In the nightcap, the River Hawks put themselves in the driver's seat from the get-go by pushing across six runs in the first. They added one more in the fourth and three in the eighth. Sophomore third baseman Cam Kneeland accounted for most of the damage in the first via a two-run double. Sophomore center fielder Jesse Burba stroked an RBI single up the middle in the sixth for the lone Saint Rose run.

Senior left-hander Jake Kozar gave up a run on five hits throughout 5.1 innings out of the bullpen and Halloran doubled for the Golden Knights. Freshman designated hitter David Smith finished 3-for-4 for UMass Lowell.

Looking ahead, Saint Rose has a 3:30 pm home game Tuesday versus conference rival Pace University at Bob Bellizzi Field at The Plumeri Sports Complex. Meanwhile, UMass Lowell welcomes Merrimack for a 3:00 pm NE-10 doubleheader Monday.
