WORCESTER, MA – The College of Saint Rose twice fought back from behind, but host Assumption produced the winning run in the seventh to hand the Golden Knights a 6-5 Northeast-10 Conference setback this afternoon. The Greyhounds (21-18/9-11 NE-10) thus took two of three in the season series following Tuesday's split in Albany, while Saint Rose (11-26/7-13 NE-10) fell to 3-7 in one-run games this season.
The Golden Knights rallied from 3-0 and 5-3 deficits, before Assumption strung together three consecutive base hits that yielded the deciding score in the seventh. Another strong relief outing by Assumption senior right-hander Tim Dupuis kept the Golden Knights off the scoreboard throughout the final 2.1 innings.
Senior right-fielder
Derek Marshall went 2-for-5 with a triple and two RBI and junior first baseman
Grant Smith finished 2-for-4 with a run scoring single to lead Saint Rose.
After Assumption took a 3-0 lead in the second, junior center fielder
Garret Keenan preceded Marshall's triple with a leadoff base hit in the fourth. Smith's base hit brought home Marshall and then two hit batsmen led to the Golden Knights third run.
The Greyhounds regained the lead an inning later when freshman shortstop Shane Keddy drove a two-out double to left field that scored a pair of runs.
Saint Rose answered once again though, this time in the seventh. Sophomore shortstop
Jesse Burba, who also finished with a pair of hits, singled to left and sophomore second baseman
Michael Carbone doubled to put a pair of runners in scoring position. A Keenan groundout scored Burba and a Marshall base hit delivered Carbone with the tying run.
However, Dupuis came on and retired the next batter to end the inning with the potential go-ahead run in scoring position.
Dupuis, who tossed 2.2 innings of no-hit relief that allowed Assumption to take Tuesday's nightcap 8-4, surrendered just one hit throughout his 2.1 innings of work to collect his third victory of the year. Keddy wound up 3-for-4 with three RBI to pace the Greyhounds 13-hit attack.
Up next, Saint Rose has a noon doubleheader versus NE-10 foe Stonehill on Saturday at Bob Bellizzi Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex. It will also be “Senior Day” with 10 players scheduled to be honored during a brief pregame ceremony. Friday's scheduled non-league game at Caldwell (NJ) was canceled earlier today. Meanwhile, Assumption is also back on the diamond Saturday with a noon twin-bill at conference rival Franklin Pierce in Rindge, NH.
