NEW HAVEN, CT – Host Southern Connecticut State University put up four runs in the bottom of the eighth to overcome a two-run deficit and take a 6-4 Northeast-10 Conference victory over The College of Saint Rose baseball team this afternoon in New Haven, CT. The Golden Knights (5-15/1-4 NE-10) stranded nine runners and were outhit 15-6 by the Owls, who remained unbeaten in league play.
Sophomore second baseman
Michael Carbone and senior catcher
John Cole each went 2-for-4 to lead Saint Rose. Carbone drove in a pair of runs, while Cole scored a run and belted a double.
The top four batters in the lineup for Southern went a combined 9-for-20, had four RBI and accounted for three runs in the game. Junior left fielder Kyle Rosadino finished 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI and a run. Meanwhile, freshman first baseman Bryan Dorsey, sophomore shortstop Ryan Geffert and sophomore designated hitter A.J. Rouleau each went 2-for-5.
The Golden Knights grabbed a 4-2 lead in the fourth after putting three runs on the board. Carbone provided the big blow with a two-run double that plated Cole and senior first baseman
Paul Partridge. Junior center fielder
Garret Keenan followed with a sacrifice fly to cap things.
It remained a two-run ballgame heading into the bottom of the eighth before the Owls mounted their final push as the first three batters reached base to start the frame. After Saint Rose junior right-hander
Tom Wiener replaced sophomore right-hander
Daniel Cavazzini on the hump, Rosadino promptly doubled to right field to knot things 4-4. Dorsey followed that up with a two-run single and Southern took a 6-4 lead it would not relinquish.
Although the Owls (11-4-1/5-0 NE-10) left 11 on base in the contest, they got an outstanding effort out of the bullpen from junior right-hander Michael Johnston. Johnston tossed 3.0 innings of no-hit ball in relief while recording three strikeouts. Conversely, the Saint Rose bullpen was touched up for four runs on four hits in 2.0 innings of work.
The two clubs return to action tomorrow when the Golden Knights host Southern at 3:30 pm at Bob Bellizzi Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex to complete a two-game regular-season series.
