Andre Pope fired in a season-high 27 points and The College of Saint Rose men's basketball team tied its best long range shooting performance with 11, 3-pointers to upend visiting Assumption College 84-57 in Northeast-10 Conference action tonight at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. The Golden Knights (11-10/8-8 NE-10) furthermore forged a split of the regular-season series between the two clubs after the Greyhounds (10-11/7-9 NE-10) took a 90-78 triumph in Worcester back on November 18.
Saint Rose limited Assumption to just 33.8 percent (24-for-71) shooting in the contest while knocking down 50.0 percent (29-for-58) of its own attempts. The Golden Knights, who never trailed, also helped their cause by going 11-for-22 from beyond the arc and outrebounding the Greyhounds 47-35.
Pope was one of three players in double-figures scoring for Saint Rose. In addition to burying seven treys, Pope recorded seven rebounds, four assists and two steals. Sophomore guard
Shea Bromirski tossed in 16 points, while senior guard
Jermaine Clark finished with 12 points, four boards and a like number of assists.
Sophomore guard Kevin Donahue and freshman forward Ronson Quick were the lone players in double-digits for Assumption. Donahue delivered 12 points in 19 minutes of reserve action, while Quick contributed 10 points and five rebounds in 18 minutes off the bench.
The Golden Knights found themselves clinging to a seven point, 28-21, lead with 6:29 left in the first half. However, Bromirski sparked a 14-5 run that sent Saint Rose into the locker room with a commanding 17 point, 42-25, margin. Devin Grimes with a pair of 3-pointers to highlight the spurt.
The second half saw the Golden Knights hold the Greyhounds without a field goal for more than five minutes, which translated into a decisive 12-0 jaunt that made it a 30 point, 65-35, affair with 11:14 left. Assumption was simply unable to recover on a night it shot just 23.5 percent (4-for-17) from long range.
Saint Rose now finds itself in a three-way tie for eighth place in the NE-10 standings heading into a key league contest at American International College on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets, who are one of the three teams listed in eighth, are set to host the Golden Knights in a 3:30 pm tip-off in Springfield, MA. Meanwhile, the Greyhounds return home Saturday to welcome Pace University for a 3:30 pm conference date.
