SAINT ROSE KNOCKS OFF SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT ON SENIOR DAY

Senior forward Malcolm Williams finished with 10 points and seven rebounds in 19 minutes on "Senior Day".
ALBANY - The College of Saint Rose men's basketball team broke open a tight ballgame midway through the second half with a 20-2 run en route to an 87-71 Northeast-10 Conference win over visiting Southern Connecticut State this afternoon at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. The Golden Knights (16-10/13-8 NE-10) have now won a season-high six straight games, while the Owls (2-24/1-20 NE-10) dropped their 15th in a row.

Prior to tip-off, Saint Rose seniors Zach Bye, Jermaine Clark and Malcolm Williams were honored with a brief ceremony to commemorate their outstanding careers on Western Avenue.

Clark and Williams wound up hitting double-digits in scoring with 11 and 10 points respectively in their final regular-season home game. Meanwhile, sophomore forward Sheldon Griffin paced five players in twin-figures with a career-high 22 points to go along with eight rebounds and six assists. Sophomore guard Shea Bromirski added 15 points and freshman guard Andre Pope finished with 11 points and six assists.

Southern Connecticut went into the locker room down 11, 42-31, but outscored the Golden Knights 21-11 throughout the first 7:37 of the second period to pull to within a point, 53-52. Freshman guard Tobin Carberry's second long ball during that span came from the left corner and capped off the scoring binge.

Saint Rose freshman forward Devin Grimes scored in the paint on the other end and Griffin added a pair of free throws, but Carberry returned the favor by knocking down a pair from the stripe that made it a 57-54 game with 10:40 left.

Pope then sparked the decisive outburst with one of his three treys in the contest. Griffin followed that up with a layup and proceeded to score eight of the squad's next 13 points that afforded the Golden Knights their largest lead of the game, 77-56, with 3:54 to go. Senior forward Clyde Chapman silenced the run with a layup for the Owls, but the damage had already been done as Southern Connecticut never got closer than 11 the rest of the way to fall for the 12th time in 13 games in Albany.

Carberry led all players with 24 points for the Owls. Carberry offset a 6-for-21 performance from the floor by going 7-for-7 from the line and burying five “threes”. Sophomore forward Kieran Ramsey contributed 17 points and eight rebounds, while Chapman had a “double-double” behind 12 points and a like number of rebounds.

It appeared as though things would come down to the wire after five ties and five lead changes ensued throughout the game's first 13 minutes. However, Bromirski and Pope broke a 26-26 tie with back-to-back 3-pointers that keyed a 16-5 jaunt to put Saint Rose up 42-31 at the break.

Both clubs are scheduled to close out regular-season play on Wednesday night. The Golden Knights have a key league date at Le Moyne College as both teams are tied for fourth in the NE-10 Standings. Tip-off is set for 7:30 pm in Syracuse. Southern Connecticut returns home to host Assumption College for a 7:30 pm conference contest.
