WEST HAVEN, CT – The College of Saint Rose outscored host New Haven 49-32 and held the host Chargers without a bucket for a six minute span in the second half to chalk up its fifth straight win behind an 82-66 Northeast-10 Conference victory tonight. The Golden Knights also outrebounded New Haven 15-8 on the offensive glass that helped them generate a 14-3 advantage in second chance points.
Freshman forward
Devin Grimes and rookie guard
Andre Pope led the way for Saint Rose (15-10/11-8 NE-10). Grimes recorded season-highs of 22 points and 13 rebounds throughout 25 minutes of reserve duty, while Pope was in double-figures scoring for the seventh time in the last eight games with 16 points. He also had six rebounds and four assists.
Senior guard
Jermaine Clark finished with 12 points and tied his career-best with eight boards. Sophomore guard
Shea Bromirski tossed in a dozen points as well.
The Golden Knights walked into the locker room down 34-33 at the break and were still in arrears, 52-50, halfway through the second half when they outscored the Chargers (4-20/4-16 NE-10) 14-0 to take control via a 64-52 advantage with 4:39 remaining.
Sophomore guard
Rob Gutierrez ignited the run by scoring seven straight points that made it 57-52 Saint Rose with 8:14 left. Gutierrez drilled a 3-pointer, finished inside and hit a jumper. Clark then scored from the perimeter, Grimes and sophomore forward
Sheldon Griffin converted layups and Grimes went 1-for-2 from the stripe to make it a 12 point affair.
After freshman guard Sean Harris snapped the New Haven drought with a free throw, Bromirski drained a 3-pointer and Clark canned a pair from the stripe to virtually remove all doubt about the eventual outcome with Saint Rose ahead by 16, 69-53, with 3:05 remaining.
Junior forward Robert Jamerson led New Haven with 17 points, while senior guard Darryl Greene had 16 points to go with five rebounds and six assists. Senior forward Kelvin Jackson and Harris wound up with 10 points each.
Looking ahead, both teams return to league action Saturday. The Golden Knights will host Southern Connecticut State for “Senior Day” at 3:30 pm, while New Haven will entertain Pace University at 4:00 pm.
