SAINT ROSE OFF TO BEST START IN FOUR YEARS

Junior guard Rob Gutierrez matched his career-highs with 24 points and 10 rebounds to lead Saint Rose over Concordia
ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose men's basketball team continued its impressive start to the 2010-11 campaign with an 86-70 non-conference victory over Concordia College this afternoon at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. At 4-0, the Golden Knights are off to their best start in four years (2006-07) and have still never been beaten (23-0) by the Clippers following the 23rd meeting between the two squads today.

Junior guard Rob Gutierrez matched his career-highs, which were established in Wednesday's victory over Assumption College, with 24 points and 10 rebounds for his second straight “double-double” to lead Saint Rose. Sophomore guard Andre Pope buried 4-of-5 attempts from long range en route to a 20-point outing, while freshman forward Dominykas Milka added 13 points and six boards in 20 minutes of reserve duty.

Concordia (1-3), which has now dropped two in a row since knocking off NE-10 preseason favorite Bentley on its home floor last weekend, received 18 points and nine rebounds from senior center William Eason. Meanwhile, freshman guard Norman Pope and sophomore guard Brandon Whitaker chipped in 17 and 10 points respectively.

The Clippers ran off six straight points to start the game, but the Golden Knights outscored Concordia 29-7 over the next eight minutes to take a 29-13 advantage at the 10:50 mark. Pope buried three triples during the jaunt and then fed junior forward Sheldon Griffin in the paint to cap the offensive onslaught.

Saint Rose eventually went into the locker room up 16, 51-35, after shooting 58.6 percent (17-for-29) from the floor and knocking down 13-of-15 attempts from the stripe in the first half. Conversely, the Clippers made just 37.8 percent (14-for-37) of their field goal attempts and 6-of-10 opportunities at the foul line.

The Golden Knights managed to boost their lead to 25, 67-42, within the first nine minutes of the second half after Pope sunk another trey and Milka finished off a conventional three-point-play with 11:07 to go. Concordia was never able to trim its deficit under double-digits the rest of the way, although it got to within 12 on two occasions over the final seven minutes.

Saint Rose returns to its league slate Tuesday night when the Golden Knights host Adelphi University as part of a conference doubleheader. Tip-off is set for 7:30 pm. The Clippers have a 10-day layoff until they head to Felician College on Wednesday, December 1 for an 8:00 pm league affair.
