ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose cut a late 2-0 deficit in half on a nifty goal, but could not come up with the equalizer in a 2-1 Northeast-10 Conference setback to UMass Lowell today at Sullivan Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex.
Senior midfielder
Liam Barrett set up the strike for the Golden Knights (1-14-1/0-11-0 NE-10) when he lofted a ball from the right flank that senior forward
Mark Quinn headed home to make it a 2-1 affair with 76:02 gone. Eight minutes later, Barrett dribbled into space up the right side line and let go a shot that forced UMass Lowell (2-10-2/1-8-2 NE-10) freshman keeper Connor Askins to be on his toes in order to come up with the save.
Unfortunately, Barrett's foray marked the last real threat posed by Saint Rose.
After a scoreless first half, the River Hawks struck 22-minutes into the second period when they capitalized off a set piece. Junior back Asley Barrios delivered a thru ball from 35-yards out that sophomore back Evan Spann one-timed into the right corner.
Freshman midfielder Kyle Garvan then accounted for the game-winner at the 66:36 mark when he slipped home a short cross from the left side by freshman back Neil Lavanchy.
The outcome put a damper on “Senior Day” for the Golden Knights. Prior to the match, midfielder
Anthony Eleftherion was honored in a brief ceremony in recognition of his four years worth of contributions to the team.
Looking ahead, both squads are back in action Tuesday with a pair of league games on tap. The Golden Knights head to upstate rival Le Moyne for a 3:30 pm kickoff in Syracuse, while UMass Lowell is scheduled to entertain Merrimack at 7:00 pm.
