ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose outscored visiting Saint Michael's 6-0 throughout the game's final 2:02 to upend the Purple Knights 80-77 in overtime in a Northeast-10 Conference game tonight at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. Saint Rose (8-5/5-3 NE-10) has now won seven of its last nine and is 7-1 at home on the year.
Sophomore guard
Shea Bromirski brought the Golden Knights to within a point, 77-76, by converting a layup with 1:30 remaining and after the Purple Knights (5-7/1-7 NE-10) came up empty, senior guard
Jermaine Clark knocked down a 3-pointer from the left wing to put Saint Rose ahead to stay, 79-77, with 17 seconds to go.
Saint Michael's freshman guard Travis Warech then had his runner in the paint blocked by freshman forward
Devin Grimes on the ensuing possession. Clark went 1-for-2 from the line with six ticks showing to seal the win, while a desperation Saint Michael's heave at the buzzer was well off the mark.
Saint Rose put five players in double-figures scoring for the second time on the season. Bromirski led the team's scoring parade for the fifth time with 20 points. Freshman guard
Andre Pope went 4-for-6 from the arc en route to a 16-point effort, while Grimes wound up with 12 points, eight rebounds and a season-high four blocks. Sophomore guard
Rob Gutierrez added 13 points and seven boards in 26 minutes of reserve duty, while Clark finished with 11 points, six rebounds and six assists.
The Golden Knights built an 11 point, 54-43, lead with 15:28 to go in regulation, but had to survive a scare down the stretch after sophomore guard Sam Cieplicki drained back-to-back 3-pointers that turned a four point deficit into a two point, 70-68, Saint Michael's lead with 59 seconds remaining. However, Guiterrez put back a Pope missed layup that tied the game for the eighth time with 37 seconds left.
The Purple Knights then opted to hold the ball for a last shot, but Warech's jumper from the left corner bounced off both the front and back rim to bring about overtime.
After a Pope 3-pointer afforded the Golden Knights their 11 point lead in the opening five minutes of the second period, Saint Michael's held them to a mere three field goals throughout the ensuing 10 minutes that allowed the Purple Knights to build a four point, 64-60, advantage by virtue of a 21-6 run. The Purple Knights went 4-for-5 from the arc during the opening five minutes of the spurt with junior forward Nate Birr canning a pair within a 45-second stretch that put Saint Michael's up, 60-58, for the first time since the 2:42 mark of the first half.
Sophomore guard Qua'ron Pinckney led the Purple Knights with 16 points and seven assists on the evening, while sophomore forward Tyler Schilling wound up with a “double-double” behind 14 points and 13 rebounds. Cieplicki tossed in 15 points throughout 26 minutes off the bench, while Warech and Birr finished with 12 and 11 points respectively.
