MANCHESTER, NH – Saint Anselm College buried 8-of-10 attempts from long range and held The College of Saint Rose men's basketball team to just 38.0 percent (19-for-50) shooting in the game to take a 74-53 Northeast-10 Conference victory over the Golden Knights at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium this evening. The Golden Knights (9-7/6-5 NE-10) made only 4-of-15 attempts from the arc and committed 19 turnovers that the Hawks (10-6/6-5 NE-10) converted into 20 points.
Saint Anselm jumped out to a 12-4 lead 4:17 into the game after junior guard Pat Luptowski, sophomore forward Jack Keough and senior guard Greg Vetrano combined to make four straight 3-pointers to open the scoring for the Hawks.
Saint Rose responded with a 14-5 run of its own to take the lead, 18-17, with 10:02 left in the first half. Four different players contributed during the spurt, including sophomore guard
Shea Bromirski who buried a “three” to start the jaunt before capping it with a layup.
The lead was short lived, however, as the Hawks embarked on a decisive 24-7 run to walk into the locker room up 41-25 at the break. Saint Anselm actually rattled off 10 straight points after facing its first deficit of the contest and held the Golden Knights to just three field goals throughout the final 10 minutes to put itself in command.
The Hawks connected on all six 3-pointers they took in the opening frame and shot 55.6 percent (15-for-27) from the floor to help their cause. Conversely, Saint Rose hit 39.1 percent (9-for-23) of its field goal attempts and turned the ball over 12 times, which led to 10 points by Saint Anselm.
Things did not get much better for the Golden Knights in the second half after the Hawks reeled off yet another scoring binge. Saint Anselm outscored Saint Rose 16-10 to open up a sizeable 22-point margin, 57-35, with 12:46 to go. The Hawks maintained at least a 20-point advantage the rest of the way.
Bromirski paced the Golden Knights in scoring for the seventh time in the last nine games with 16 points behind 4-of-7 shooting from the arc. Sophomore forward
Brian Hanuschak wound up with 10 points and eight rebounds, while senior guard
Jermaine Clark finished with eight points.
Vetrano led three players in double-figures for Saint Anselm with 18 points. Meanwhile, Luptowski and freshman guard Quinn Woodhouse tossed in 14 points apiece.
Up next, Saint Rose heads to Merrimack College Wednesday night for a 7:30 pm league game in North Andover, MA. Saint Anselm remains home Wednesday evening as the Hawks host Southern Connecticut State University for a 7:30 pm NE-10 date.
