ALBANY – Senior right-hander
Brendon Malkowski allowed only four hits and fanned 11 over the distance to lead The College of Saint Rose to a 2-0 win against Northeast-10 Conference rival Southern New Hampshire today at Bleecker Stadium.
After surrendering a leadoff base hit to senior right fielder Scott Strong, Malkowski retired the next 19 batters in order en route the first complete game shutout of the year for the Golden Knights (20-24/13-14 NE-10). Saint Rose has now won six of its last eight.
Junior designated hitter
Derek Marshall went 3-for-4 with a double to extend his hitting streak to six games. Meanwhile, sophomore third baseman
Grant Smith and freshman center fielder
Jesse Burba drove in the two Golden Knights runs.
Sophomore shortstop Tim Rines accounted for two of Southern New Hampshire's (14-23-1/11-15-1 NE-10) four base hits on the afternoon.
Saint Rose went up 1-0 in the second when Marshall doubled to left field and advanced to third on the play via a poor relay that scattered away from the infield. Two batters later, Burba stroked a base hit up the middle to bring across Marshall.
The Golden Knights then had a chance to break the game open in the fifth and sixth, but left the bases loaded on both occasions. They managed to add an insurance marker in the seventh when freshman second baseman
Michael Carbone drew a leadoff walk; stole second and moved to third via an errant throw. He then scored on a Smith single to left field.
Southern New Hampshire made things a bit interesting in the ninth when the Penmen put two runners on with two down. However, Malkowski induced junior center fielder Justin O'Neil to pop up to short for the game's final out.
Both teams have their last regular-season series on tap this weekend. The Golden Knights will visit conference rival Assumption for a noon twin-bill in Worcester, MA Saturday. The two clubs are then scheduled to play a noon doubleheader at Bleecker Stadium Sunday. Meanwhile, Southern New Hampshire has a three-game set with Southern Connecticut State.
