GOLDEN KNIGHTS DROPPED BOTH ENDS OF DOUBLEHEADER AT SOUTHERN N.H.

Senior shortstop Ashley Anderson belted a two-run home run in today's opener at Southern New Hampshire.
MANCHESTER, NH – The College of Saint Rose dropped both ends of a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader at Southern New Hampshire to close out its 2009 campaign today. The Golden Knights (15-23/11-17 NE-10) suffered a 4-2 defeat in the opener, and fell 5-3 in the nightcap.

Senior right-hander Nicole Welch allowed three earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work in the first game. Senior shortstop Ashley Anderson homered to lead the Saint Rose offense.

Meanwhile, freshman right-hander Amanda Barton came out of the bullpen to toss 5.0 innings of no-hit ball and senior first baseman Ashley Bernstein had two home runs to lead Southern New Hampshire.

The Golden Knights jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but the Penmen (21-23/17-11 NE-10) scored a pair of runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to secure the win. Bernstein drove a shot over the center field fence to tie the ballgame 2-2 in the fourth, and then smacked another two-run shot an inning later to close out the scoring.

The Penmen rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the finale as well by scoring once in both the third and fourth frames and three more times in the sixth.

Senior first baseman Katie Wiemann finished 2-for-2 with an RBI to lead the Golden Knights. Senior left fielder Nicole Arpin went 3-for-3 and scored a pair of runs and senior designated player Melissa Loughran wound up 2-for-3 for Southern New Hampshire. Senior center fielder Karissa Bettencourt added a solo home run.

Sophomore designated player Alyssa Farrell and Wiemann belted back-to-back RBI singles to account for the two Saint Rose runs in the second. The Penmen got one back in the third via Bettencourt's round-tripper and then tied it an inning later on a run scoring base hit to center field by Loughran.

In the sixth, Southern New Hampshire broke it open behind RBI singles by sophomore shortstop Melissa Vitagliano and senior pinch hitter Michelle Maranto. The Penmen also took advantage of two Saint Rose errors.
