SAINT ROSE SWEEPS FRANKLIN PIERCE IN 2009 HOME FINALE

Sophomore right fielder Megan Rios collected four hits this afternoon
ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose softball team wrapped up its 2009 home slate in convincing fashion this afternoon via 5-0 and 8-0 Northeast-10 Conference victories over Franklin Pierce University this afternoon at Esposito Field. The Golden Knights have now won three of their last four games, while the Ravens remained winless (0-14) on the road this season.

Sophomore right-hander Nicole Traylor picked up her first collegiate win in the opener for Saint Rose (11-21/7-15 NE-10), tossing 7.0 scoreless innings after yielding just four hits. Furthermore, she fanned four batters and walked one while facing five batters over the minimum.

Senior shortstop Ashley Anderson led the Golden Knights' charge behind a 3-for-3 effort at the plate, including a double and RBI single. Sophomore right fielder Megan Rios wound up 2-for-4 with a run as well. The Ravens received a pair of hits from freshman center fielder Jayme Bilafer.

Rios led things off with a single down the left field line in the bottom of the first and scored two batters later when Anderson delivered an RBI single to center field that put Saint Rose on top 1-0.

The Golden Knights gave themselves a 4-0 cushion in the third when Anderson doubled to right center and scored on an RBI double by senior first baseman Katie Wiemann. A pair of errors by the Ravens allowed Wiemann and senior left fielder Kerry Monahan to score as well.

The final margin came in the fifth when Anderson walked, advanced to second on a groundout by junior catcher Amanda Morano and scored on an RBI single by Monahan.

In the finale, Saint Rose jumped on top 7-0 after five to secure the sweep. After taking a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly by Anderson in the third, Wiemann extended her hit streak to eight games with an RBI single up the middle in the fourth to make it a 2-0 ballgame.

The Golden Knights broke things open with five runs in the bottom of the fifth on six hits and a pair of Franklin Pierce errors. Freshman designated player Amanda Macio provided the big blow with a two-run single, while Rios and senior right-hander Nicole Welch added RBI singles.

Welch was solid in the circle for Saint Rose, fanning seven while walking one over the distance. In the process, she became the fourth pitcher in program history to register 200 career strikeouts (202). Rios, Monahan and Macio wound up with two hits apiece to lead the onslaught. The Ravens received two hits by senior right fielder Jackie Prybella, while Bilafer finished 1-for-3.

The Golden Knights hit the road for three straight league doubleheaders to close out the 2009 regular season this week. The first of those contests takes place Wednesday when they head to Assumption College for a 3:00 pm NE-10 twin-bill in Worcester, MA. Franklin Pierce returns home Tuesday for a pair of conference games versus Southern Connecticut State University beginning at 3:00 pm.
