EASTON, MA – Senior right-hander
Nicole Welch scattered four hits and fanned six over the distance to lead The College of Saint Rose to a 3-0 victory in the finale of a twin-bill at Northeast-10 Conference rival Stonehill this afternoon. The Golden Knights (8-20/4-14 NE-10) dropped the opener 4-3.
Senior first baseman
Katie Wiemann homered for the second time in as many days and finished 2-for-3 to lead the Saint Rose offense in the nightcap. Sophomore right fielder
Megan Rios and junior catcher
Amanda Morano also had two hits apiece.
Wiemann put Saint Rose up 1-0 in the second inning, before the Golden Knights plated two more in the fifth on a Stonehill error and a Morano base hit down the left field line. Stonehill threatened in the bottom half, but Welch got out of a bases loaded, no out jam by inducing a groundball, registering a strikeout and generating an infield pop up.
In the opener, Morano went 2-for-3 with a double and a triple and also scored two runs. The Golden Knights pushed across a pair in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead after Morano took three bases with a shot down the right field line that scored senior shortstop
Ashley Anderson. Senior left fielder
Kerry Monahan then brought Morano across with a single to center.
However, Stonehill (9-17/9-5 NE-10) senior first baseman Courtney Young belted a leadoff home run over the left-center field fence in the home half that deadlocked the game 3-3. An inning later, senior second baseman Meghan Sheehy lined a run scoring single to center to put the Skyhawks in front to stay. The Golden Knights had a chance in the seventh, but wound up stranding the tying run on third.
Saint Rose returns home Saturday to host UMass Lowell for a noon conference doubleheader. Meanwhile, Stonehill gets back on the diamond tomorrow with a 3:00 pm twin-bill versus league rival Southern New Hampshire.
