SAINT ROSE PUTS CLAMPS ON #19 STONEHILL 71-68

Senior center Lauren Revesz
EASTON, MA – The College of Saint Rose women's basketball team held host and 19th-ranked Stonehill College to just two field goals throughout the final six minutes that allowed the Golden Knights to take a 71-68 Northeast-10 Conference victory over the Skyhawks at Merkert Gymnasium in Easton, MA this afternoon. The win gave Saint Rose (17-9/12-9 NE-10) a sweep of the regular-season series against Stonehill, which was ranked in the top-25 during both encounters between the two clubs this year.

Senior center Lauren Revesz registered her second straight “double-double” with 26 points and 10 rebounds to pace the Golden Knights, who have now won eight of their last 10 games. Senior guard Dana Brown finished with 16 points, five rebounds and four assists, while junior guard Elizabeth Buckley tossed in 12 points, all in the second half.

The Skyhawks (19-7/14-7 NE-10), which were without the services of leading scorer and rebounder Kelsey Simonds, received 19 points in 26 minutes of reserve action from junior guard Megan Methven. Meanwhile, senior guard Bethany Tighe and sophomore guard Kristen McWhirter added 15 points apiece.

It was a tightly contested game throughout as the lead changed nine times throughout the final 20 minutes. A Revesz layup at the 8:06 mark gave Saint Rose its largest lead of the afternoon, 57-52, but Stonehill rattled off eight straight points to grab a three point, 60-57, advantage with 5:08 left. McWhirter scored five points during the run and Methven buried one of her five, 3-pointers in the ballgame to account for the scoring.

The Golden Knights showed their resolve by converting four of their final six field goal attempts while limiting the Skyhawks to just two field goals the rest of the way.

Stonehill continued to maintain a three point, 66-63, edge with just more than three minutes on the clock. Buckley and Revesz tossed in back-to-back layups to put Saint Rose up one, 67-66, but Tighe knocked down a pair of free throws to put the Skyhawks in front 68-67. Revesz then scored in the paint on the Golden Knights' very next possession and converted a feed from Brown with 27 ticks left for the final margin. Following a Stonehill timeout, Methven generated a pair of 3-point attempts in the final seconds, misfiring on both tries that allowed Saint Rose to escape.

The Golden Knights shot 53.6 percent (15-for-28) from the floor in the second half, which helped them overcome a slim 34-33 halftime deficit. Conversely, the Skyhawks made just 38.7 percent (12-for-31) of their attempts, including a 3-for-12 effort from the arc to account for their struggles down the stretch.

Saint Rose currently sits in seventh place in the league standings entering its final game of the regular season Tuesday night at Saint Anselm. Tip-off is set for 5:30 pm in Manchester, NH. Stonehill is now in a three-way tie for second place in the NE-10 standings and will finish its regular season on the road as well. The Skyhawks are scheduled to meet American International College at 5:30 pm Tuesday in Springfield, MA.
