ALBANY – Merrimack shot 58.3 percent (14-for-24) from the arc and held off a late rally by The College to Saint Rose to upend the Golden Knights 78-70 in Northeast-10 Conference action tonight at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. The visiting Warriors (8-17/7-13 NE-10) halted a Saint Rose team that had won seven of its previous eight heading into the evening, and in the process snapped a four-game skid of their own. The Golden Knights are now in eighth place in the 15-team NE-10 with two games remaining in the regular season.
Senior center
Lauren Revesz registered her third “double-double” of the year with 26 points and 10 rebounds to lead Saint Rose, which was hurt by 26.9 percent (7-for-26) shooting from international waters. Junior guard
Elizabeth Buckley tossed in 12 points throughout 19 minutes of reserve duty and senior guard
Dana Brown added 11 points.
The Golden Knights (16-9/11-9 NE-10) never led throughout the final 38 minutes and were down by as many as 12, 47-35, with 18:20 remaining after Merrimack went into the locker room up seven, 42-35, at the break and then rattled off five unanswered points at the onset of the second period.
Saint Rose still trailed by seven, 51-44, with 13:02 to go, but twice cut its deficit to a point throughout the next seven minutes. The final time came after Brown knocked down a 3-pointer to make it a 59-58 ballgame with 5:09 remaining.
However, Merrimack responded with a 12-5 spurt behind a jumper and a pair of 3-pointers from senior guard Amanda Shannon that put the Warriors in the driver's seat, 71-63, with 1:29 showing on the clock. Merrimack then proceeded to go 7-for-10 from the stripe to seal the victory.
Shannon tossed in 16 of her-game high 29 points after halftime thanks to a 6-for-8 shooting effort from the arc. Junior guard Casey Miller wound up with 14 points and freshman guard Gennifer Roy finished with 12.
Revesz, Brown, senior forward Ashley Anderson and senior guard Suzana Sormaz were honored during a brief pregame ceremony as part of “Senior Night' Festivities.
Both clubs get back to the hardwood with conference games Saturday. The Golden Knights head to Easton, MA for a 1:30 pm date at Stonehill, while the Warriors have a 1:00 pm home encounter with Southern Connecticut State in North Andover, MA.
