ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose men's basketball team forced visiting Le Moyne College into 19 turnovers that resulted in 26 points and allowed the host Golden Knights to upend the Dolphins 90-72 in a Northeast-10 Conference game at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium tonight. Saint Rose (5-3/4-3 NE-10) has now won four straight, while Le Moyne (5-3/3-3 NE-10) suffered its second loss in three contests.
A pair of Golden Knights established career-highs this evening. Sophomore guard
Shea Bromirski pumped in 27 points on the strength of five, 3-pointers, while sophomore forward
Sheldon Griffin finished with 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting.
Also for Saint Rose, senior guard
Jermaine Clark tossed in 18 points behind four treys and freshman guard
Andre Pope was nearly perfect after contributing 14 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the floor and a 5-for-5 effort from the stripe.
Reigning NE-10 Player of the Year and senior forward Laurence Ekperigin led the Dolphins with 18 points and nine rebounds. Meanwhile, senior guard Damani Corbin had 14 points and seven assists.
Le Moyne shot 70.0 percent (14-for-20) from the field in the first half, but it was Saint Rose that walked into the locker room with a 39-33 halftime advantage. The Golden Knights led by 10 on three occasions throughout the final four minutes of the first period, including a 35-25 margin following a 3-pointer by Pope with 2:47 until intermission. The Dolphins managed to cut their deficit to six after Corbin and senior guard Durett Miles hit back-to-back layups to close the scoring.
Saint Rose was unable to extend its lead early on in the second half and led by only three, 50-47, when Le Moyne senior center Eduardo Archibold Brown finished in the paint with 12:00 to go. It was at that point that the Golden Knights embarked on a 19-4 run keyed by a conventional 3-point play by Griffin. Clark capped things off with eight straight points thanks to back-to-back “three's” and a layup that made it a 69-51 affair with 7:50 on the clock.
The Saint Rose margin actually ballooned to 23 points, 88-65, during the final two minutes. The Golden Knights accomplished that by knocking down 59.3 percent (16-for-27) of their shot attempts in the second half while going 5-of-8 from long range and 14-for-14 from the stripe.
Saint Rose will now have 10 days to prepare for its second non-conference test of the year. The Golden Knights are scheduled to host Concordia College at 7:00 pm on Friday, December 18 at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. Le Moyne returns to action Thursday when the Dolphins head to Division I St. Bonaventure for a 7:00 pm non-league affair.
