ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose recorded the 400th win in only its 19-year exclusive NCAA Division II tenure with an impressive 94-72 non-conference victory against visiting Mercy College at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium tonight. The Golden Knights (7-5) shot a season-high 59.0 percent (30-for-61) from the floor, including 65.6 percent (21-for-32) in the second half; got 40 points from their bench, and had four players in double-figures scoring for the sixth time this year.
Saint Rose, which is now 6-1 at home this season, took a 42-29 lead into the locker room at intermission and removed any doubt about the eventual outcome by opening the second stanza with a 25-4 run that made it a 67-33 ballgame with 11:33 remaining. Mercy (0-9) got no closer than 20 points the rest of the way.
Sophomore guard
Rob Gutierrez led the Saint Rose scoring parade with a career-high 22 points in 24 minutes off the bench. Gutierrez went 9-for-12 from the floor and 4-for-5 from beyond the arc.
Furthermore, freshman forward
Devin Grimes made the most of his debut in the starting lineup with his first career “double-double” via 16 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard
Shea Bromirski tossed in 17 points and sophomore forward
Sheldon Griffin added 10 in 15 minutes of reserve duty. Senior guard
Jermaine Clark made his presence felt with a career-best 13 assists to go with seven rebounds and six points, while sophomore forward
Brian Hanuschak wound up with nine points and nine boards.
As for Mercy, junior guard Jimmy Gunville jumped off the pine and proceeded to bury six of his nine attempts from long range on the way to 18 points. Junior guard Hasaan Powell finished with 13 and freshman guard Tyler Jones tossed in a dozen.
The Mavericks cut an 11 point deficit to five following a Gunville 3-pointer that made it a 32-27 affair with 4:23 remaining in the first half. However, Saint Rose foreshadowed its second stanza onslaught by scoring nine of the period's final 11 points en route to a 13 point halftime lead.
Up next, Saint Rose gets back to Northeast-10 Conference action with a 7:30 pm date against visiting Saint Michael's in the second half of a league doubleheader on Wednesday, January 6. Mercy on the other hand returns to the floor Saturday for a 4:00 pm meeting at Dominican College in Orangeburg, NY.
