ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose men's basketball team held the University of New Haven without a field goal throughout the first six minutes of play to jump out to a 13-0 lead and never trailed in a 72-65 Northeast-10 Conference victory at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium tonight. The Golden Knights (3-3/2-3 NE-10) have now won two in a row, while the Chargers (0-5/0-4 NE-10) dropped their fifth straight to remain winless.
Senior guard
Jermaine Clark fired in 15 of his game-high 24 points before halftime to lead the Saint Rose charge. He furthermore moved past Cameron Rice ('97) for fourth place all-time in 3-point field goals (195) after burying three in the contest. Sophomore guard
Shea Bromirski added 15 points and a career-high seven rebounds, while sophomore forward
Brian Hanuschak contributed 11 points and eight boards.
New Haven received a “double-double” from senior forward Cassius Chaney. Chaney finished with 20 points and 13 rebounds in a workmanlike 39 minutes of action. Senior guard Darryl Greene was the only other Charger in double-figures with 10 points.
Clark and Bromirski combined for 11 of the squad's first 13 points in the game's initial 13-0 outburst. New Haven clawed its way back to get to within six, 19-13, following a pair of free throws by freshman guard Sean Harris. The Golden Knights then assumed control via a 15-4 run that was capped by a Clark jumper with 5:13 on the clock. Saint Rose wound up generating a 40-28 halftime margin by shooting 55.6 percent (15-for-27) from the floor and knocking down six 3-pointers during the opening period.
The Chargers came out of the locker room and whittled their deficit to four, 52-48, with 8:15 to go in the game. However, the Golden Knights extended their lead to 12 on two occasions over the next seven minutes, including a 65-53 advantage with 1:10 remaining after two free throws by Clark.
New Haven did not go away and got as close as four, 66-62, with 18 seconds left. Saint Rose did not help itself by going 1-for-5 from the stripe during the 9-1 run by the Chargers. The Golden Knights remedied things down the final stretch though as Bromirski and freshman forward
Devin Grimes converted six straight free throw attempts to help produce the final margin.
Both clubs return to action Saturday afternoon for a pair of league games. Saint Rose will head to Southern Connecticut State University, while the Chargers are set to host Pace University. Both contests are scheduled to tip-off at 1:30 pm.
