GOLDEN KNIGHTS HAVE THREE GAME WIN STREAK SNAPPED AT NEW HAVEN

Dana Brown
WEST HAVEN, CT – New Haven senior forward Lauren Hood hit a free throw with 28 seconds remaining to lift the host Chargers to a 65-63 victory against The College of the Saint Rose in Northeast-10 Conference action this evening. The setback snaps the Golden Knights (8-5/3-5 NE-10) three game win streak, while New Haven (8-5/5-4 NE-10) has now won four of its last five.

Following Hood's free throw that put the Chargers up 64-63, Saint Rose senior center Lauren Revesz could not get a jumper to go down with 11 ticks showing. The Golden Knights were thus forced to foul, and again Hood went 1-for-2 from the stripe to account for the final score. A desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer by senior guard Dana Brown fell wide of the mark.

Brown, who has been in double figures in 11 of the team's 13 contests to date, tied her season-high with 21 points to lead Saint Rose. Revesz finished with 11 points and seven rebounds. Junior guard Elizabeth Buckley contributed 13 points, while sophomore guard Lynsey Timbrouck wound up with six points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Saint Rose went into the locker room up six, 40-34, at the break after shooting 45.2 percent (14-for-31) from the field, including 54.5 percent (6-for-11) from the arc, and holding the Chargers to 33.3 percent (13-for-29) shooting. However, the final 20 minutes proved to be another matter. The Golden Knights shot just 24.3 percent (9-for-37) and went 1-for-11 from long range, while New Haven buried 57.1 percent (12-for-21) of its opportunities.

Saint Rose rebounded from a six point deficit midway through the first half by limiting New Haven to four field goals during the final 9:03. However, the Chargers opened the second stanza with an 8-2 spurt that tied the game 42-42 with 17:03 left. It pretty much remained a one possession game the rest of the way, but the Chargers got to the foul line 10 more times during the final 20 minutes and were able to take advantage of their chances down the stretch.

Hood led all players with 23 points in 27 minutes of action for New Haven. Junior forward Alyssa Saunders recorded a “double-double” behind 12 points and 13 rebounds, while junior guard Helin Marte added 11 points, six boards and seven assists.

Saint Rose returns to action Thursday when the Golden Knights host NE-10 rival UMass Lowell. Tip-off is set for 5:30 pm at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. It will be "Saint Rose Employee Night" with all of the College's employees admitted free. Meanwhile, New Haven has a 6:00 pm non-league game at Dominican College on Thursday.
