ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose ran its win streak to four games with a key 68-52 Northeast-10 Conference victory against visiting Pace University this afternoon. The Golden Knights (13-7/8-7 NE-10) put four players in double-figures scoring and held the Setters (12-7/9-6 NE-10) to 34.1 percent (14-for-41) shooting, including 14.3 percent (2-for14) from the arc, with the final month of the regular-season looming. The contest was sponsored by Johnson Illington Advisors and was part of the College's Student-Athletic Recognition Day and Alumni Appreciation Day.
Senior center
Lauren Revesz led the Saint Rose scoring parade for the third straight game behind 17 points, seven rebounds and four steals in only 23 minutes of action due to foul trouble. Senior guard
Suzana Sormaz went 3-for-4 from the arc on the way to a season-high 16 points, while junior guard
Elizabeth Buckley and senior guard
Dana Brown added 10 points apiece.
Saint Rose limited Pace to a pair of field goals throughout the opening nine minutes on the way to a 16 point, 28-12, lead with 5:27 to go until the break. The Setters, who came into the day in fourth place in the NE-10 and two games up on Saint Rose in the loss column, trailed by 14, 36-22, at halftime and faced a double-digit deficit throughout the initial 10 minutes of the second period.
Pace junior guard Laura Mooney then got her club to within seven, 53-46, with 7:33 left by canning a pair of free throws. However, the Golden Knights responded with a 14-6 run that removed little doubt about the eventual outcome by virtue of a 67-52 advantage with 1:49 showing on the clock. Revesz and Buckley nailed consecutive jumpers to ignite the spurt and then Sormaz and Brown capped it by drilling back-to-back 3-pointers.
Freshman forward Brittany Shields led all scorers with 23 points by going 7-for-10 from the floor for the Setters. She also hauled in six rebounds. Another rookie in freshman guard Carol Johnson added 11 points in 20 minutes off the bench by converting all eight of her chances from the foul stripe.
Both clubs get back to the hardwood with 5:30 pm road games Wednesday. The Golden Knights head to Colchester, VT to meet Saint Michael's, while the Setters have a date at Le Moyne in Syracuse.
